Bruce Braley on Chuck Grassley: A ‘farmer’ with no law degree
Politico ^ | March 25, 2014 | By EMILY SCHULTHEIS

Iowa Rep. Bruce Braley, a Democrat running for Senate, was caught on videotape disparaging fellow Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley as “a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school” — comments that later drew an apology from the candidate. The video, posted online Tuesday afternoon by GOP opposition research firm America Rising, shows Braley speaking to what the group described as a group of lawyers at a fundraiser in Texas.

“If you help me win this race, you may have someone with your background, your experience, your voice — someone who’s been literally fighting tort reform for 30 years in a visible and public way on the Senate Judiciary” Committee, said Braley, a trial lawyer by training who is running to replace Iowa Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin. “Or you might have a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school, never practiced law, serving as the next chair of the Senate Judiciary. Because if Democrats lose the majority, Chuck Grassley will be the next chair of the Senate Judiciary.”

Braley is the sole Democratic candidate in a race that could, as he alludes to in the video, help determine which party controls the Senate after November. He faces whoever emerges from a crowded Republican primary field that includes state Sen. Joni Ernst, businessman Mark Jacobs and former U.S. Attorney Matt Whitaker…

I don't see the political wisdom in insulting elderly farmers in Iowa. Not a brilliant strategy to win their votes. This guy is not ready for prime time.

This is the type A## that the Congress does not need and we should to protect the nation from. Scum ambulance chasers do not need to apply as a candidate for high office.

Not sure why it matters if Grassley has a law degree or not.

Constitution doesn't require one, and by my count, there's too many asshole lawyers in Congress and the White House!

His heartfelt apology? “I’m sorry that was caught on videotape.”

With very few exceptions, using asshole and lawyer in the same sentence is redundant!

I have a tiny bit of dirt on Braley. Believe it or not, I thought he was a repub. Now that I know better, I’ll be making a call to a newspaper. I work for the G., and I know at least one Wash Post reporter....

If Sen. Grassley can use this "fighting tort reform for 30 years" comment in a positive way this can decimate this lawyer before his run for Congress can start.

Tort reform equals lower medical costs (malpractice), lower insurance costs, and less money to the carpetbagger democratic party.

I hear Grassley is popular in Iowa. The story could have more legs there than nationally. If it puts Iowa into play as a possible Senate pick-up it would be a useful gaff. It is nice to see a Dem putting foot in mouth for a change.

I remember a state senator in New York who was also a farmer. When Medicaid was proposed in the State Senate, he said it would bankrupt the state and was one of the few to vote against it. It eventually became so costly, it had to be revised.

If the GOP is smart enough to put this in ads everywhere. DESTROY BRALEY!

CLOVIS FOR CONGRESS!

Agree, but my point was that this guy must be dumb as dirt. He just insulted about a third of the voters in Iowa, the very people he wants to represent in the Senate.
