Largest earthquake since 1980 strikes Yellowstone Park, at site of rapid uplift
USGA ^

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a light earthquake occurred at 06:34 AM on March 30, 2014 (MDT). The epicenter of the magnitude 4.8 shock was located 4 miles north-northeast of Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. This earthquake is part of a series of earthquakes that began in this area on Thursday, March 27. As of 8:15 am today, this series has included at least 25 earthquakes in addition to the main shock, with the largest of magnitude 3.1. The magnitude 4.8 main shock was reported felt in Yellowstone National Park and in the towns of West Yellowstone and Gardiner, Montana.

Today's event is the largest earthquake at Yellowstone since February 22, 1980, and occurred near the center of a region of recent ground uplift described in a YVO Information Statement on February 18, 2014. The Yellowstone Volcano Observatory has been tracking this uplift episode for about 7 months.

Not sure if gods wrath or seismic activity. Was there a pagan in the park this weekend? Perhaps a homo or two copulating in a most grotesque and unnatural way.

Considering how active that location is, I’m surprised someone didn’t come along and build a city on it.

Is the Yellowstone supervolcano about to bust loose again? It may be already a little overdue.

Sure would take the fracas over Crimea off the new cycle. Might even overshadow Malaysian Flight 370.

Thanks! That’s a great site. Waiting for the new video card budget to permit dual monitors so I can have a couple things up all the time. I already had it, but appreciate it.

I’ll throw you one back for ‘weather’:

If you want to see what it can do, watch this video (how I tracked it down)

If Yellowstone pops, there might not be transmissions on TV or an Internet by 34 years from now.

Just a layman wrt earthquakes. I know that releasing the energy in small event over time is preferable to the energy building up and being released in one event.

This isn't exactly an earth quake as in the fault in CA. The root causes are different. But the idea is the same.

Within a year upwards of 95% will be dead in America, from the social aftermath of the devastation to the food supply lines and missing utilities which support our civilization.

Seismic activity at the site of a super volcano is never a source of warm and fuzzy feelings.

Like others have said on the thread - smaller earthquakes can be good in fault zones because they release pressure without catastrophic results. On the other hand, Yellowstone is an atypical geological region with both tectonics and a volcano without peer. As such, earthquakes there remind us of what could happen considering the incalculable amount of energy that is present.

Only God knows. Most are fascinated with such predicted events because we are powerless to stop it and recognize how it would change our lives. A place like Yellowstone reminds us how small and insignificant we are.

In the mind of a liberal, they are all connected. Don’t you know Pres. Bush caused them all.
