This same area had a bigger quake in 2010 and we’ve already forgotten about it, so I doubt serious tsunamis are generated in this region of the world.
I don’t think that quake was offshore, though... think Sumatra and Banda Aceh... which was later clocked at 8.9.

This quake was shallow. As I understand it, the more dangerous quakes occur deeper within the earth. Is that true?

Google earth shows a 6.7 very close to the same coordinates two weeks ago.
This may or may not explain the warming waters in the EPAC.. seismic shifting leading us to an El Nino.
Seismographers don’t seem to have a handle on this in terms of talking with emergency personnel in vulnerable areas.
But it’s only been 23 minutes.

No, the shallower, the more damage. This one occurred offshore which helps, especially if most of the shake/shift took place within the adjoining nazca plate.
They are evaluating Hawaii..
