After uproar on talk on human sexuality, Dominican sister to take sabbatical

Reaction to a Dominican sister’s presentation on human sexuality at a North Carolina school has prompted “speculation from many sides,” but few among those commenting about it “were actually present to hear the talk,” said an April 4 statement from Aquinas College in Nashville, where she is an associate professor.

The college was referring to a March 21 presentation by Dominican Sister Jane Dominic Laurel at a Charlotte Catholic High School student assembly. Titled “Masculinity and Femininity: Difference and Gift,” it drew the ire of many students and parents and sparked an online petition with more than 3,000 names.

About 900 people packed the school gym the evening of April 2 to criticize the assembly and the school leaders who arranged it.

School and diocesan leaders arranged the meeting to hear from concerned parents and explain the intended purpose of the assembly. There were comments from parents who supported the school and the presentation, but most of the comments were critical. Two observers called the meeting’s climate “disrespectful” and “hate-filled.”

In its statement, Aquinas College said, “The events and discussions that have transpired over the last two weeks reflect that there is something in this that surpasses an ordinary high school assembly.”

The college said it was “saddened by this extreme outcome and wishes to reiterate that this is not something the college condones or desires to create. There is division where there should be unity.”

Some parents at the Charlotte meeting said they felt betrayed by school administrators for not being told about the all-school assembly beforehand. Other parents objected to some of the material Sister Jane presented about the alleged causes of same-sex attraction and the way she presented it.

I would have less problem with this is these sessions were held segregated. Only one sex present at each of two sessions.

Any “catholic” student or parent who is upset over the good sister’s discussion on homosexuality is a catholic in name only.

“her deviation into realms of sociology and anthropology was beyond the scope of her expertise,”

I have a feeling that if Sister Jane's talk "deviated" into support for the theory of global warming, they wouldn't have been as unhappy.

I'm amazed -- Catholic schools seem to have morphed into something completely different from what they were when I attended school. I'll be sure to consider this information the next time I receive a letter from my Jesuit college asking for a donation.

Anyone would standing up and reading from JPII's writings on the inherent dignity of man and woman would get the very same reaction.

Good Lord Almighty.

Now when they heard this, they were cut to the quick, and they began gnashing their teeth at him. But being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; 56and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened up and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”…

But they cried out with a loud voice, and covered their ears and rushed at him with one impulse. When they had driven him out of the city, they began stoning him

Apparently the back-door brigades are well organized.

Toleration of Homosexuality has proven itself a failure. Toleration leads to acceptance leads to endorsement leads to dominance.

Their were right about this vice in Genesis and Leviticus.

So she has been destroyed for speaking Catholic doctrine in a Catholic school.

Yet many FReepers say that all is well in the Catholic church.

This is an informal schism. Either the nun was right and the school was wrong, or vis versa.

WOW! A faithful Christian woman, telling the truth to young people who are fed with lies, sent away.

I used to hope that judgement would fall only on our rotted government as the primary instigator of corruption. But if the people embrace it too...

It is part of an ongoing story. In short, the nun addressed students at a Catholic school on sexuality. She covered the biblical standards that we are created male and female, and that these roles were and are gifts to be embraced. She asserted that homosexuality was a destructive deviation from that path.

The students objected and enough parents weighed in to force a crisis about the nun’s intolerance. The school, ostensibly a Catholic school, threw the nun under the bus for presenting Catholic doctrine.

The sixth commandment is indeed clear. Fornication is not to be indulged in. Fornication can be man-woman, man-man or woman-woman. In any case, it is not to be indulged in except by a man and his wife. This country’s Federal Government now says a man can marry a man and a woman can marry a woman, but from the beginning it was not so. It was an abomination and still is. It is against nature. Anyone who looks down at the equipment that they were given and refuses to live with it are just arrogant. They can live with that if they want. But what I cannot understanis why they cannot live with what they are given. If you were born a man then live like a man. Same with a woman.
