Social Security, Treasury target taxpayers for their parents’ decades-old debts
Washington Post | 4.10.13 | Marc Fisher

The Washington Post reports that hundreds of thousands of taxpayers who are expecting refunds this month are instead getting letters informing them that because of a debt they never knew about — often a debt incurred by their parents — the government has confiscated their check.

People should not be made responsible for the debt of their parents

I agree. Adjust your withholdings during the year so you have to pay some tax. Just a couple hundred bucks.

You’ll have more money in your pocket during the year.

Newt Gingrich became majority leader in 1995, some six years after Reagan left the oval office.

If your mom has a house or real estate still when she passes on, look for Medicaid to recover costs of care from the sale of that asset.

To avoid that, look into a Ladybird trust. Might be called another name in your state. It allows her to stay in the home and pass the house down to children. It is basically just a transfer of that asset to the inheritor and your mom has the right to live there until her passing. There is still a 5 year look back by Medicaid that will still allow them to recover costs if she passes within the five year period.

Thanks for the ping, but, in point of fact, I don’t love this one. I hate it that OUR government does this, routinely, to We the People.

I am wondering just how far We the People are willing to bend before there is a major pushback?

I might remind, gently, all FReepers that THEY WORK FOR US!

Last I checked, they are to do our bidding! There must be someway, somehow to stop these kinds of government overreaches.

Here we have but one more example of why government, and in particular the Internal Revenue Service, is not our FRiend!

It is but a start, so let’s get to it:

IT IS TIME TO REPLACE THE INCOME TAX WITH THE FAIRTAX AND ABOLISH THE IRS!

Go to http://www.fairtax.org to find out how you can help.

My mother-in-law’s estate tax return (she died in 2011) came up for “review” last year, and the IRS demanded $4000 in “gift taxes for the 1970’s”. No way to fight something like that when you don’t have any records going back that far.

Charity starts at home and take care of your business.

You are operating under the false premise that this process is fair and rational. It is not.

Do you really think all those Mexicans my wife has to work with, and who get $5,000 to $10,000 'refunds' even though they only pay a few thousand in taxes to begin with, will be included? You're delusional.

The way I read the story, these offspring received SS survivor benefits themselves, the amounts were incorrect for some reason, and they are being docked for it via tax refund seizure.

The GOP will miss another grand opportunity to practice conservative populism. How many readymade issues must these dolts miss?

The GOP is the tax collector for the welfare state. If they really wanted anything to change, they'd get rid of withholding entirely. Make the taxpayer write that monthly/quarterly/yearly check.

Lets not bother with fixing this, we have more important issues at hand like the right to calling Bologna, Bologna.

We did something similar with the farm land. The house they live in now my Mom doesn’t want to set up as a trust since they just bought it and she wants to remodel. To be honest, they can (and will I suspect) take the house. I just don’t want the Fedgov coming after me for the rest.

The bipartisan political/regulator class folks will tax you any way they can--impact fees, bait-and-switch bills, etc.

Debt Ceiling

Debt Ceiling

I hear reference to the number of debt ceiling increases as the main factor when comparing presidents.

I usually hear that Reagan raised the debt 18 timed. A little research at the Office of Management and Budget web site reveals this is true. The debt ceiling spreadsheet data is from 1940 to the present.

I did infer the following from Table 7.3, Statutory Limits on Federal Debt 1940-Current.

President Reagan
approved of increasing the debt ceiling 18 times
for a total increase of $684.4 Billion, $684,400,000, $684.4 thousand million.

President George H.W. Bush
approved of increasing the debt ceiling 9 times
for a total increase of $1,345 Billion, $1,345, 000,000, $1.345 Trillion.

President Clinton
approved of increasing the debt ceiling 6 times
for a total increase of $1,805 Billion, $1,805,000,000, $1.805 Trillion.

President G.W. Bush
approved of increasing the debt ceiling 7 times
for a total increase of $5,365 Billion, $5,365 Million, $5.365 Trillion.

President Obama
approved of increasing the debt ceiling 11 times
for a total increase of 5,896.6 Billion $5,896.6 Million, $5.896.6 Trillion.

Also see my comment #97 for the hair raising truth about how many people are employed by government and some of those who influence government the most.

The answer is to avoid buying anything that you don't really need. Continue finding, studying, repairing and building ways to become more self-sufficient. Learn to produce something of good use only as a hobby for now.

Have fun. Enjoy the slide toward freedom.

One more thing: be nonpolitical, until we are no longer morally bankrupt.
