As a recovering bass tournament fisherman I can say that outside of the occasional spawning fish and yearlings the majority of mature bass in the south live in water between 15 and 30 feet (I have caught some in 30+ feet albeit some were suspended in tree tops). Not deep by ocean standards, but we had a saying if you were in your boat close to the shore and casting toward it, 90% of the fish were behind you.
All the bass I caught over 10 pounds were in around 20 feet of water.
