The FDA Goes All “Pelosi” on E-Cigarettes
Townhall.com ^ | April 26, 2014 | Michael Schaus

God bless the Federal Government… What would we do without their warning labels, consumer restrictions, and retail regulations? Now the FDA has decided that e-cigarettes (ya know, those healthier alternatives to cancerous cigarette smoking) should be regulated the same way as tobacco. They’ve even adopted the “Pelosi” style of governance: We should regulate it before we study it.

Apparently, the FDA has no real clue about what – if any – health effects nicotine-water-vapor has on someone’s lungs… Which, according to the government, is why we need to start regulating the heck out of the industry. After all, why should companies exist when the Feds are there to keep economic growth at a sub-par level?

According to CNBC, the FDA wants to begin regulating e-cigarettes the same way traditional ‘coffin nails’ are regulated, because… Well… They can. Through a non-democratic process, the Fundamentally Dictatorial Administration (better known as the Food and Drug Administration) has decided that they are entitled to regulate e-cigs the same way as ‘cancer sticks’ because “they don’t yet” have any idea that said alternatives to Luckies, Camels, and Marlboros are bad for you.

Regulate it… Then investigate it.

NPR has even accused the e-cig industry of targeting children through their grape, cherry and candy flavored “vapors”… Which has added to the FDA’s argument for increased regulation of a booming industry. (So far, no one has accused the marijuana industry of targeting children through their edible brownies and rice-crispy treats. Although I have accused them of trying to win over Chris Christie.)

Of course, the FDA’s obsession with a relatively harmless alternative to sucking down a Lucky Strike seems mildly hypocritical. I mean, heck, this comes at the same time that the Department of Justice has decided to ignore current Federal laws regarding Colorado’s decision to allow marijuana vending machines. And while drug users are being considered for clemency by Team Obama, manufacturers of cigarette alternatives are about to be hit with a crippling regulatory burden. (Seriously: Do we just hate free markets? Or has Obama worked out some secret deal with RJ Reynolds to keep e-cigarettes scarce that we don’t know about?)

Following the anti-cigarette lead of Nanny Bloomberg, the FDA has decided that they should start snuffing out effective smoking cessation devices, such as e-cigs, because they are kinda reminiscent of the real thing. I only ask, because I don’t remember this kind of outrage when nicotine patches were introduced as alternatives to brand-name ‘suicide installment plans’.

And so… It doesn’t really matter what “facts” our illustrious FDA discovers. They have already decided that they need to start regulating nicotine laced water vapor… Because that is obviously the problem with America: We don’t have enough warning labels.

Warning: This article may induce a sense of cynicism. Reading, and sharing, of this article may result in the loss of liberal friends, an increase disdain for government intervention, and a progressively sarcastic sense of humor.

Well, water vapor is a far more potent greenhouse gas than cee-oh-too...

Nicotine is addictive. It is also a great insecticide.

“Apparently, the FDA has no real clue about what – if any – health effects nicotine-water-vapor has on someone’s lungs”

Actually they do... Clearly people inhale on humid days with no ill effect. People also smoke on humid days. The fact that nicotine gum doesn’t carry a warning label suggests that it’s not the nicotine in cigarettes that causes health problems.

I have one I occasionally use that doesn’t have any nicotine at all. It’s got a nice cinnamon flavor to it.

Both our Internal medicine doc and wifey’s cardiologist (she goes due to leg artery issues) have green-lighted our e-cigs.

same people who want to ban tobacco and e-cig are the same people who want to make legal drugs and smoke drugs.

It’s wonderful that the gov’t can just step up and decide to attack a new product they otherwise have no power over. What CAN’T they ‘regulate’ if they choose to do so?

It’s a money grab - no tax money on this one, yet. Also the liquid can be made by yourself at home. No need for a giant socialist megacorp to make it.

So let’s regulate it. Lots of work for lawyers, lobbyists, politicians and the associated graft.

Let’s not forget that it is cheap and healthy alternative to quit smoking - as opposed to nic patches, nic gum - or the big pharma, mind altering, “chantix” - aka the suicidal ideation pill. Also Chantix has lousy long term results for quitting.

The level of control freakishness and corruption on this issue just astonishes me.

Disclosure: Vaping e-digs is the only thing that got me off smoking a pack a day. Do I feel healthier - hell yes! It’s cheap and I can easily taper the nicotine level when I want. Also I do not use the crummy gas station versions. I use Johnson Creek Tennessee Cured liquid @ 2.4% nicotine, a CE4 clearomizer with an EGO™ Battery. I wasn’t even trying to quit, and within 2 days I had no interest in cigarettes - I would never have believed it if it hadn’t happened to me.

Think of all that time and money wasted on Amendments to the Constitution, not to mention time and money spent on the Constitution itself. Shazam! Let’s just have the President and bureaucracies make it up as they go along and bribe Congresscritters to shut up about it.

It is about control, jobs for liberals policing the new laws/control, and last but not least, the taxes to pay for the new laws/controls.

Why aren't they regulating the modified whacky weed created these days that has as up 35% THC, vs 5% THC of previous decades? The fact that cigarrettes are the devil, and addictive Adderral for kids and brain numbing Pot are FDA medically approved drugs, is ridiculous.

Medical marijuana advocates would do well to question anti-genetic protests. These initiatives are a back-door way of re-prohibiting medical marijuana under the guise of banning GM plants.
<

Ironically, just as marijuana is approaching legalization, anti-GM initiatives give a weapon to drug enforcement agents who could use GM bans to justify raids against marijuana cultivators–even small growers within the “medical marijuana” limits. What protesters have missed is that today’s potent varieties of marijuana were developed by genetic modification. The University of Central Florida even has a pending US Patent for a cannabis sativa genetic modification technique.

I heard one of these geniuses of critical thought saying on the news the other night that "Almost nothing is known about how e-cigarettes affect the body. That's why we need to regulate them."

Whisky
Tango
Foxtrot?

It won’t be long before the FDA and the EPA will be forming e-cigarette SWAT teams with “snipers”. If you need ammo, you better get it now before the government boys buy it all up.
