There is a groundswell of pressure to change the Washington Redskins' team name, which some argue is offensive, a movement that gained some steam with a letter signed by 50 U.S. senators calling for action. The letter referred to the Redskins' name as being an example of "racism" and "bigotry" and managed to make a connection to the NBA fiasco with outgoing Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling.
This prompted a reaction from the Redskins. Team president Bruce Allen countered swiftly with a response to Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid in a letter of his own. The theme of Allen's three-page letter, which clearly was carefully and thoroughly researched, was that the name is a respectful, positive one not the racism that Reid and others are claiming.
Some notable pieces of the letter, including the facts that Allen presents:
"More than a decade ago one of the foremost scholars of Native American languages, Smithsonian Institution senior linguist Ives Goddard, spent seven months researching the subject and concluded that the word redskin originated as a Native American expression of solidarity by multi-tribal delegations that traveled to Washington to negotiate Native American national policies.
"The highly respected Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania surveyed Native Americans nationally and reported that an overwhelming 90% of respondents said the name was not offensive. More importantly, Native Americans continue to embrace and use the name and logo."

I think having scantily clad cheerleaders on the sidelines is disrespectful to women.
Time to ban them too.
Here’s a classic dust up. One side yells racist and bigot so the other side cannot back down because to do so would validate the labels thrown at them. If I were the owner(s) I would continue to use the name but meet with true representatives of various tribes throughout the country seeking a consensus from them.
The NBA franchise in Washington was known as the “Bullets” before they became the “Wizards” because of “gun violence”.
Talk about racism and the NBA....who would have known that their team in the nation’s capital would be named after the “Imperial Wizards” of the Ku Klux Klan.....
What exactly is Elizabeth Warrens’ position on this issue?
Maybe too respectful in some cases — like when they take on the Cowboys.
Bruce Allen must not be contributing or not contributing enough to the democrap party for Harry Reid to play the bully. We are seeing the true democrap party at work here. Harry’s got a protection racket going here.
I think that members of the U.S. Senate have other things they should be doing, rather than investigating sports team nicknames.
The issues of American Indian nicknames is one of those issues which liberals can have their angst about. Have at it. But to me, it is not right for Senators to weigh in like this. With all the other issues to deal with, why are Democrat senators weighing in on a sports team nickname?
My grandfather was Irish. Notre Dame’s team name perpetuates a stereotype of the Irish, implying that we are unusually combative. Guess what? I’m not offended. I suppose I should want to punch somebody, but I don’t.
KUDOS to Allen for writing this letter - THE TRUTH!
But libs never care about the truth - only their evil agenda.
Which have both speech and thought control at the foundation.........
NOT a Redskin fan (RGIII fan tho), but I’m with them on this one - fight to the last to keep the name - it’s a noble one.
Simple solution...move the team to Idaho. Adopt the POTATO as mascot. They could still keep the REDSKIN knickname. Go fighting SPUDS go!
The members of the Senate need to change their moniker to Horse.s A$$.
They got it bass ackwards, change of the “Washington” part of the name.
RE: My grandfather was Irish. Notre Dames team name perpetuates a stereotype of the Irish, implying that we are unusually combative. Guess what? Im not offended.
Well, the players for the Boston Celtics are mostly .... BLACK. And I don’t think there is anyone in the team now with Irish, Scottish or Gaelic ancestry.
Yes, it is. But how do you stop YOUNG WOMEN from "strutting their stuff"? You can't convince them of anything. It makes them feel REALLY good and happy. They REALLY believe that it's completely okay to turn on men for the high they feel.
If a man tries to talk to them, he's "queer" and if a woman, of any age, tries to talk to them, she's jealous.
LOL. Their time will come when their "twinkle-tit" days are done. Then THEY will become the same as the rest of us old women. TOO LATE, dearie.
No one has ever been able to talk sense to hormone-driven teenagers. It's their edge, they think and our Creator's way to get them to breed, IN A GOOD WAY, we all hope.
Some are too stupid to live and find their path a hard one. When they blame others, they are doomed. When they look in the mirror and realize who is to blame...there is hope. Nothing new here.
High time that more people refuse to knuckle under to PC insanity!
“The NBA franchise in Washington was known as the Bullets before they became the Wizards because of gun violence.”
They were originally the baltimore bullets because in the old days, baltimore manufactured a lot of bullets sort of like the pittsburg steelers.
When you see natural reddish hair, non-brown eyes and/or some freckles on the Celtics, you KNOW there is some European blood in them. MOST blacks have some white blood.
My husband and I got to visit Kenya some years ago. I was SHOCKED, truly SHOCKED, at what REAL Africans look like.
They are EBONY, black as my computer. I hadn't realized how BLACK real Africans are.
There was an African-American middle aged couple there too and they appeared shocked as well. In fact, THEY looked white compared to the Kenyans.
I think we Americans forget just how much WHITE has been interjected into the African-origin blood here.
We have a Nigerian priest at our parish...also EBONY. No surprise to me. He is 100% African.
