The Greek tragedy that is David Dewhurst’s political career
Washington Post ^ | 5/27/14 | Aaron Blake

Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst (R) is very likely to lose his reelection bid today, in what would be the latest huge setback (and a potentially fatal blow) in a once-promising political career that had the wealthy second-in-command on a crash course for the U.S. Senate.

In doing so, Dewhurst is likely to become the first big-name Republican to lose two primaries against the tea party — and only two years apart.

So what the heck happened to David Dewhurst?

In sum: The seeds for his likely loss were planted long ago, and it's not all his fault. But there are plenty of lessons available for other Republicans seeking to avoid similar fates.

Here are a few:

1) Blood in the water will draw sharks

Dewhurst, you might recall, was considered the favorite to join the Senate whenever a Texas seat opened up — so much so that it seemed like he might even get a rare free pass. His name cropped up as a would-be senator as early as 2009, when then-Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R) said she would resign to run for governor in 2010.

Hutchison later opted to finish out her term, meaning the race to replace her was set for 2012. Then, of course, Dewhurst ran into a guy named Ted Cruz.

Holding the race in 2012 seemed like a good thing for Dewhurst; after all, he could run for Senate while keeping his day job, which wasn't up for reelection until this year. But his loss this year shows that even a seemingly win-win situation can lead to a political loss. Dewhurst's defeat to Cruz effectively left blood in the water, and a coterie of Republicans soon lined up to challenge him.

It was a very satisfying moment this AM when I, yet again, pulled the lever against Dewhurst. Lord willing, let this be the last time it’s needed.

Why is it a Greek tragedy?

Isn't he a supporter of Illegals? If so, he made his bed, now it's time to lie in it...

BTW, isn't the President of the Texas Senate also a supporter of the illegals? Hasn't he been screwing over his fellow Republicans?

No big loss on DD. Think of it as enforced term limits. Dan Patrick will have to prove his mettle meets his mouth like Cruz. Irks me that we couldn’t get rid of Cornyn.

I suppose when you are in Washington and surrounded by pompous wealthy jerks that it might not occur to you that the we rubes here in Texas just might not like the guy, no way at all.

Getting rid of Dewhurst sends a message to Cornyn and Rove that we’re still here and we’re not going away.

Five lessons listed and no room for the most important one?

Namely, RINOism doesn't sell well in places where real Americans still make up a voting majority.

...pulled the lever against Dewhurst...

Where, in Texas, can you pull a lever any more? In my county it's all electronic voting. I'd love to pull a lever against Dewhurst if I could. I will be able to tap a screen, and I suppose that's something.

That said, I do have a lot of respect for what Mr. Dewhurst did in funding the museum at Utah Beach in Normandy. Perhaps he could spend some more time there after he's done with "government service."

Metaphorically, TPM. Metaphorically. Leave me a little room for poetic license. "Spinning the little dially-wheel thing" doesn't have the same ring to it.

Of course you are not going away in Texas. Just the opposite.

It is the Rove RINO’s Going away.

Dewhurst isn’t nearly as bad as Straus, whom the San Antonio GOP insists on keeping on as Speaker.

If we could have gotten rid of Cornball on March 4, it would have sent a wave across the South and probably engulfed Loveable Lindsey as well. I read today that Chris McDaniel is a likely winner next week in MS but that Mark Pryor leads Tom Cotton by double digits in neighboring AR. Apparently, the Democrats will also keep the AR governorship with Mike Ross, as Asa Hutchinson is a weak two-time candidate for governor.

The polling I saw in AR was very dubious. Cotton will win and Hutchinson should be carried in, if only because AR has realigned (but he is an uninspiring retread nominee that unduly puts the contest at risk).
