Walmart, bastion of cheap patio furniture, Mickey Mouse Dolman t-shirts and financially abused workers, has been doing its best to weasel its way into NYC for a while now. And like any good corporation hellbent on destroying the very fabric of the so-called American Dream, it looks like Walmart's trying to curry favor with New Yorkers by funneling cash into charitable funds—but the City Council smells a rat, and they've told the retailer to back off.
According to the Post, 26 of the Council's 51 members have penned an open letter to Walmart and the Walton Family Foundation demanding they keep their "toxic money" out of the city. "We know how desperate you are to find a foothold in New York City to buy influence and support here,” the letter reportedly reads. “Stop spending your dangerous dollars in our city. That’s right: this is a cease-and-desist letter.”
Apparently, the keepers of Walmart's financial treasure chest have been handing millions of dollars to local charities, with recent beneficiaries including the New York Women’s Foundation and HIV/AIDS non-profit Bailey House. The ever-controversial charter school programs have also been on the receiving end of Walmart cash, which can't possibly sit well with city elected officials. Plus, the charity money comes tainted with the blood of a million mom-and-pop shops, and today City Council Members like Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito gathered on the steps of City Hall, decrying the corporation and ripping up mock Walton Family Foundation checks cut to the city.

And if they DON’T back off?...
gasoline pushin’ 4 bucks, electric about to go up, on fixed income ... I shop WalMart.
Are these people friggin nuts? Or just liberal?
They want to turn away charitable money from a major corporation? Because it’s somehow “tainted” money? Because they operate a legal business, but don’t operate it according to liberal criteria, they can’t donate to charitable causes in New York???? Really?????
Maybe they would have a point if they rejected money from drug dealers or other illegal activity. But Wal Mart is verboten?
Will they also refuse money from tobacco companies, or Chick Fil A, or Exxon-Mobil? Just go right down the list of evil businesses according to liberal criteria????
It ain't your dad's Buick anymore, son.
Look at the list of “charities” Walmart is funding. All liberal leftist organizations.
And even at that, these anti-Walmart morons aren’t happy.
There a lot of different ways to look at this. While don’t think Walmart is merely making donations out of their own good heart, the money might be helping someone at the same time and Walmart does destroy mom and pop shops and take away their means to support their families. On the other hand they make it possible to shop at one place and get decently low prices. It’s a Catch 22 situation.
RE: And I shop at Lowe’s and Home Depot
Best Buy, Costco, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Target, BJ’s, etc. These big box stores don’t kill Mom and Pop businesses?
Might as well write a low stopping them all from expanding so that the Mom and Pop businesses can survive.
Like true little Fascists, they will then probably go after the recipients.
Neither does anyone else.
Maybe in 1955 it was a sin, but today there is no incentive to build/start/have a mom n' pop ... especially brick and mortar .. for any reason.
Could prolly get a reasonable store front in Detroit.
Mom n pop disappeared 20 years ago ... the argument is moot.
After reading some of the letters we have gotten from people in NY city looking for information about Maine’s secession, I can’t figure out why anyone or company would want to stay there, never mind move there.
I was shopping yesterday. I needed a feed supplement for one of my horses.
I have used this supplement for over 20 years. Normal price is about $22 + tax for a 40# bag. Local Mom & Pop store had some on hand====$36.99 plus tax for the bag.
I told them it could stay on the stack.
The theory that Walmart kills mom and pop shops has been disproven.
I get my chicken feed at Tractor Supply (used t'be about 9 bucks, now pushin' 15) rather than a local mom n po at 18
And even at that, these anti-Walmart morons arent happy."<
Will businesses never learn, you cannot buy off the radical left, there is never enough money or compromise for them.
In Maine we are not trying to deal with them or compromise with them, we are simply trying to get them to move, to leave before the secession vote, and we are becoming more and more successful.
Never seen a mom n’ pop offer medical, dental & 401k.
“Are these people friggin nuts? Or just liberal?”
Same thing.
