After the dust failed to entirely settle following the Mississippi GOP primary, sending us to a runoff between Senator Thad Cochran and state senator Chris McDaniel, Ed had the following to say about Cochran’s prospects.
[Cochran's] inability to best McDaniel last night may have some Mississippi voters who supported the incumbent last night wonder whether it’s better to make a change now that is obviously inevitable, while those few who voted for someone other than the top two finishers are already looking for a Cochran alternative. The runoff will probably still be relatively close, but don’t be surprised to see McDaniel win by more than 51/49, either.
Team Cochran might have been reading Ed’s comments and taken notice. But rather than throwing their hands up in despair, reports indicate that they may have decided to attempt a rather unusual comeback strategy for a primary.
Senator Thad Cochran’s supporters opened Mississippi’s Republican Senate runoff on Wednesday by signaling that they would treat the race like a general election and seek the votes of Democrats and independents during the three-week campaign against State Senator Chris McDaniel.
The only reason this is a possibility is found in the rather free wheeling rules of Mississippi election law. Nobody registers by party, so anyone can vote in the election. The Democrats already have their nominee without the need for a runoff – and they’re highly unlikely to win the general election – so there’s nothing stopping them from voting in the GOP tiebreaker this month. Still, Matt Lewis seems somewhat skeptical.

Color me very suspicious about this. Isn’t this guy supposed to be the “Tea Party” candidate? Now, asking Independent support, that I can understand, a lot of people are not willing to put the R moniker in front of their names these days (including me) but Dems?
If Cochran is wooing Dems, what makes him any different than the geezer he’s trying to replace?
Democrats? Who needs democrats when you have 50 percent of republican voters who will vote for such a person in the primary?

I would think that if the Democrats thought they had a chance to win in November then they would view McDaniel as the easier candidate to beat. So if they turn out for anyone I imagine it would be him.

That’s the other side of the coin. So I think McDaniel will be the nominee, and since MS has an aversion to democrats, he’ll likely be the next senator, though not without the Establishment trying to undermine him.
The conventional wisdom is that the Democrats have a much better chance in the General Election against McDaniel than they do up against the incumbent, Cochran. The Democrat Party in Mississippi has said as much. Then, why on Earth would Democrats rush to the runoff election to help the guy that they consider to be the most formidable opponent.
I think this is sound and fury from the Cochran camp, won’t amount to much.

I just don’t see Ms democrats voting for Thad or any other Republican. Of course I have been wrong before.
Cochran, the establishment favorite, used the dems in the first election to keep from outright losing, and will try the same thing in the run-off.

There is an exception to this rule against asking Dem support. In 1976, Reagan relied on Demo crossover votes to beat Ford in primaries in Indiana and clobber him in the deep south. The Dem party membership was different then, and the people who voted for him would have voted for him in the general, had he beaten Ford.

I would think that a push against the invasion of the US would have powerful appeal to dems who are hurting for jobs and opportunities.

Actually, he’s “wooing” almost nobody, because he has basically slept thru just about the whole campaign.

Not exactly. Jazz Shaw needs to do his homework. Mississippi law says that if somebody voted in the Democratic primary, he or she cannot vote in the Republican run-off.
What IS true is that if somebody didn’t vote in EITHER the Demo or GOP primary, then that person can vote in the GOP run-off.
Hawthorn is exactly right. If a Democrat voted in the Dem Primary last Tuesday, they canNOT vote in the GOP Run-off. Anyone who voted in the GOP Primary and the folks who voted in neither Primary CAN vote in the GOP Run-off. HOWEVER, they must have been registered to vote in the June 3rd Primary. They cannot run out and register after the Primary and vote in the Run-off.

From the Cochran camp that’s just more pap, from the democrats that’s just saying “please don’t throw me in the briar patch”.
They don't need big numbers. 5000 would do nicely, if the primary is any indication.
In this VERY tight election, anything at all could have a deciding impact.
FWIW, I have an old college friend who is some sort of mover-and-shaker in the Miss Dem party, and judging from his Facebook posts, the Dems are pushing for McDaniel, not Cochran.
Rightly or wrongly (and I think wrongly) they believe their guy can beat Chris.
