Will America Ever Be Forgiven For Slavery?

Growing up in the South, the narrative surrounding slavery I heard was that the Africans were walking around free in their own country, minding their own business when white men came over in ships. The white men attacked, chained, kidnapped and forced the Africans aboard ships. This storyline was repeated both at school and in the black churches. However, the chain of events never quite added up with me. I remember the first time I raised a question about this narrative to my sixth grade teacher. I asked her how was it that these white men could invade a foreign country and overpower the natives of that country. She did not have an answer. I asked my father that same question and he referenced the movie Roots (which I later learned was plagiarized and fabricated).

We should bring slavery back, but only make slaves out of liberals.

Throughout the history of the world (to this very moment), slavery has been a continuing institution. What is unique is emancipation. We are in a very select and virtuous group on this issue.

I don't want to be punished with a liberal slave.

NO way!

You couldn't give me a liberal.

They're enough of a PITA on their own recognizance, but to have to keep track of the d@mnred thing? Uh-uh. You couldn't pay me enough to take one.

I really question the whole idea of reparations. Reparations for what? Reparations are only useful if those who were wronged are alive; that is, using money to make amends for the wrong. But...

1. None of those who were enslaved are still alive.
2. None of those who enslaved them (black and white) are still alive. [Note: the first slave owner in America was a black man that owned another black man.]
3. America fought a bloody Civil War from 1861-1865 that ended slavery in the United States. Nearly 700,000 Americans died in that war. I had two great grand uncles [father's side] that fought for the Union in that war. My ancestors liberated the oppressed, so why should I pay reparations?
4. On my mother's side, grandpa and grandma came to America between 1900-1910; nearly four decades AFTER slavery ended. Both of them were from Sweden and never owned or saw a slave. So, why should I pay reparations for grand parents who weren't even in this country at the time the great grievance of slavery was committed?
5. Since LBJ's “War on Poverty” began in 1964, the government now spends over $1 trillion (that's a 1 with 12 zeroes) in transfer payments per year to the perpetually aggrieved 12.5 percent minority...and that is not enough?

Bite me, black bigots, race hustlers, and Liberal scum.

I’ve seen British liberals point to the Dunmore proclamation as evidence of British altruism toward slaves.

The problem is that the Dunmore Proclamation was a bill of attainder. It stripped property from patriot families that included slaves. Adult male slaves were given the choice of fighting on the side of the crown and granted freedom after the British won. Female slaves were given to British officers and loyalist families or resold. After the war the British mostly broke their promise to the blacks who fought for them, most were simply left here, some went to Canada and some were resold in the Caribbean.

While slavery was illegal in Great Britain, it existed in many British colonies till right around the time of our civil war.

The whole premise is silly. The only people who need to apologize and be apologized to are all lying under the wrong side of the green. Maybe we can have a séance and put this illogical garbage to bed. But I’m willing to have the government pay reparations to the first 148 year old person who walks through the door, and proves she (no he for obvious reasons) was held in chattel slavery.

Exactly.

Islam still practices it today in over 15 countries in Africa.
The greatest slavers over history were the Arabs, then with the advent of mohammet...piss be unto him...slaving carried on for over 1400 more years.
The trans saharan slave trade / arab involvement was far more brutal that the trans atlantic slave trade.

Most people are unaware of the true facts, but want another reason to blame the most successful nation in the world. Its tough being the lead sleigh dog, as everybody wants to bite your ass.

One last thought. There are only two countries in the world that have actively taken up the cause of ending slavery: 1) Great Britain and 2) the United States. The Brits banned the slave trade in 1807 and sent the Royal Navy to enforce it. America banned the importation and sale of slaves in 1807 (effective in 1808). The U.S. Navy joined the RN in suppression of the African to Caribbean to America slave trade. [The import ban did not affect domestic ownership or trafficking of slaves. That required a bloody Civil War.]

Finally, only one country in the world has ever fought a civil war that had the abolition of slavery as one of its war aims. That country is America and there are 700,000 dead Americans to attest to that fact.

It is about time America had a real discussion about slaves and slavery, but you’ll never convince Liberals or black racists to do so. Stoking the fires of racism is just too profitable in misplaced guilt and MONEY to selected, protected species.

Repayment was made more than full 150 years ago. My GGgrandfather and his two brothers enlisted in one of the first union volunteer units within weeks of Sumpter. They, many of my other ancestors, and millions fought, bled, and died to set things right. Many of them also fought bled and died during reconstruction fighting the democrat party KKK who did everything possible to subdue the former slaves.

If anything, the descendants of those former slaves owe the descendents of those who fought to free slaves reparations.

If they want reparations, go first to the democrat party of slavery and then to the still existing tribes in africa who caught and sold their ancestors into slavery.

Reparations from us? Pound sand a**holes.

You're spot on!

Nearly everyone in the United States (North, South, East and West) are now very proud of and grateful for what President Lincoln and Union forces accomplished in freeing this country from the scourge of slavery. The accomplishment is a permanent one. Slavery is not coming back to America and there are very few Americans who believe it should. It's gone forever!

The United States deserves high honors for ending slavery here in the United States.

Maurtania has slavery even today, with an estimated 20% of the population enslaved.
You can’t blame white people for that, though Islam could be.

i am sick and tired and bored hearing about SLAVERY.... it’s a thing of the past and its about time people started following real leaders like Ben Carson instead of regurgitating the “crutch of slavery” and what i call the “black chip” that losers carry on their shoulders. the FAMILY structure is a starting point.... yeah you studs who impregnate and walk away from RESPONSIBILITY.. yeah you open legged sluts who conceive as an economic way of living... while neglecting to PARENT your child(ren)... PUT THE RESPONSIBILITY RIGHT WHERE IT BELONGS ... ON THE INDIVIDUAL... society OWES YOU NOT A THING MORE THAN ANY OTHER CITIZEN... It’s about time to take advantage of educational opportunity and establish a moral base to make decisions from. the INDIVIDUAL is responsible for their own destiny....dont blame your failure on others.

The British finally ended slavery in their colonies in the 1830s. France did likewise in 1848 (after having ended slavery during the Revolution, then re-imposed it).

During the heyday of the transatlantic slave trade, white Europeans were being enslaved by Muslims if they were captured while sailing on the Mediterranean, or if they were living in a village near the coast that was raided. The Turks took young boys from rural Christian families in the Ottoman Empire and made them slaves of the sultan.
