Here's Why Ted Cruz Thinks A Moderate Republican Won't Win In 2016
Business Insider ^ | June 23 2014 | Hunter Walker

Posted on 06/23/2014 6:39:15 AM PDT by PoloSec

A lengthy profile of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) was published in the June 30 issue of the New Yorker. The story, which was written by Jeffrey Toobin, begins with Cruz, an outspoken conservative who is widely considered a potential GOP candidate in the 2016 presidential election, explaining why he doesn't think a moderate Republican will win that race.

"It is amazing that the wisdom of the chattering class to the Republicans is always, always, always ‘Surrender your principles and agree with the Democrats,’" Cruz told Toobin. "That’s been true for my entire lifetime. The chattering classes have consistently said, ‘You crazy Republicans have to give up on what you believe and become more like Democrats.’ And, I would note, every time Republicans do that we lose."

According to Toobin Cruz cited Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan as examples of conservatives who won elections and President Gerald Ford as a moderate who lost.

"President George Herbert Walker Bush ran as a strong conservative, ran to continue the third term of Ronald Reagan, continue the Ronald Reagan revolution," Cruz said. "Then he raised taxes and in ’92 ran as an establishment moderate—same candidate, two very different campaigns. First one won, second one lost. In 1996, you got Bob Dole; 2000 and 2004, you have George W. Bush; 2008, John McCain; 2012, Mitt Romney. And what does the entire D.C. Republican consulting class say? ‘In 2016, we need another establishment moderate!’ Hasn’t worked in four decades. ‘But next time will be the time!’"

Later on in the story, Toobin questioned Cruz's theory.

‘Moderate’ = neither fish nor foul....scared of their own shadow! Their allegiance is ‘for sale’ and everyone knows it.

A group not to be trusted, one way or another.

The left’s worldview just cannot accommodate Cruz being successful.

When he wins, we’ll hear “how did that happen? I don’t know ANYONE who voted for him”...

But I bet he journalists who were ID’d as enemies would know people who voted for both candidates...

Nixon was not a conservative in my opinion.

Not by any stretch of the imagination.

Yep - What I've been saying too. Glad to see that someone in Washington has an inkling of the mindset in "flyover country." I've heard talk of reanimating Romney for a second loss. The ideal establishment Republican ticket would be Romney/McCain packaging two "me too democrat lite" losers in a single ticket.

Not sure about that. They may not be fowl, but they are pretty foul.

“,,,because they didn’t win in 1976, 1992, 2008, 2012................”

Add 2000 as well. George W. Bush (a moderate) lost the popular vote and would have lost the electoral vote as well had Ralph Nader not drawn 97,000 votes from Gore in Florida (Bush won by less than 1000 votes).

He nails it, but leaves out the huge money and press factor that have been assisting weak moderates into prime positions against the Democrats.

Look how much money Mitt had against all other challengers.
Look also at how much good Press Mitt had until he was left standing against the Democrat Obama, then the press got into folders of women and dogs on roofs along with illegally taped 47% issues.

That is currently the way the political world rolls.

We need to take the press back from liberals.

Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

That is the strategy of the Republican establishment.

Could Rev. 3:15-17 not be more appropriate for describing the GOPe and conservatives’ view of them? We keep spitting them out of our mouth.
“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.”

We concentrate on Florida in 2000. We seem to forget that Gore lost his home state which would have put him over the top.

In comparison with the Democrat nominees (Hubert Humphrey and George McGovern), Nixon seemed very conservative.

But, I agree with you that he did not particularly espouse conservative principles when he was POTUS.
