Rachmaninov: Sonata for Cello and Piano in G minor, Op. 19, second movement

The scherzo is in 12/8, an unusual time signature, is marked “allegro scherzando”, and is in C minor. It’s quiet and spooky. You expect someone to sneak up behind you and bite you on the neck. At 1:58 you’ll notice that the pianist has to play a middle C using 5-3-2-1 on his right hand sequentially as the time signature goes briefly to 18/8. It’s little things like this that make Rachmaninov so intimidating for us mere mortals who are pianists.

At 2:17, for his “trio” section, Sergei switches to 4/4 and A-flat Major for the kind of melody a lesser composer would have used in a slow movement. But Rachmaninov, the master of melody, has no problem using it here. The cello soars over the piano for a perfect tune. Your screen may go blurry when he resolves it.

He brings it back to the scherzo material, and the coda ends it quietly in a very spooky manner.

Ol’ Lynn is something else. He’s really made this sonata his own.

Rachmaninov: Sonata for Cello and Piano in G minor, Op. 19, third movement

The slow movement is in E-flat, 4/4, and is marked “andante”. What is spooky is that parts of it sound like Gershwin and even feel like Gershwin on the fingers if you’re a pianist. But George was only toddler in 1901, so it has to be a coincidence.

This is one of Sergei’s great melodies; it’s only four pages, but it’s four pages of beauty. At 4:40, Sergei sums up in a short coda that never fails to turn my screen blurry. It’s sheer bliss.

This is Lynn Harrell at Santa Fe in 2008 when he was still sporting the goatee.

"Music hath charms to soothe the savage breasts."
-- Shakespeare

The classical music station in Boston once had a bumper sticker that said, "Soothe a savage breast today." The music adds a touch of beauty to those whose life may be temporarily devoid of it.

Rachmaninov: Sonata for Cello and Piano in G minor, Op. 19, fourth movement

This finale is in 4/4, G Major, and is marked “allegro mosso”, which means you don’t want the moss to grow under your feet. It’s in sonata format, and the joy just leaps off the page.

At 0:55, the second subject appears in D Major with a “moderato” marking.

At 2:36, development begins. Sergei breaks the up the first subject into fragments with the piano ending each segment with block chromatic chords. The idea is to prevent any sense of a home key. At 3:56, he works the second subject. At 4:50 he brings back the first subject, but its chromatic chords lead to a G Major resolution at 5:27, and we’re at the recap!

The first subject is stated as before, and at 6:20, the second subject appears in G Major.

At 8:05, the coda begins with a slowing-down technique of block chords and pedal points on the piano while the cello releases the tension. He fools you into thinking that he’s going to end it quietly and slowly. Then at 8:55, he speeds it up for a leap at the heavens. Sergei knew how to write an ending.

Over the years, Harrell has taken some flack over his approach to the finale, which is over-the-top. Some believe a more restrained approach would be more appropriate. But I’ve come to disagree. This calls for a storming of the heavens, and Harrell delivers.
