With this one question, the homeowner identifies the root of the problem: Escalation. At fault is the training of today's police officers. It used to be that police officers were taught to remain calm and to de-escalate tense situations so that violence or further violence might be avoided. Today, police are trained to shout, curse, swear and do whatever is necessary to disorient whomever they confront. In so doing, police routinely escalate situations into violent confrontations that are resolved by hair triggers. But citizens be damned as long as the officer arrives home safely at the end of his shift.
Just think. The cops can shoot you with the same impunity. If that thug POS officer that had slit that dog’s throat last week shot the dog nothing would happen. They say the majority are good cops. BS. When they tolerate the blood thirsty thugs and run to their defense the public is justifiable in their mistrust and contempt for police departments. When they are driving MRAPS, sending SWAT shock troops to murder old men, and throw flash bang grenades in cribs, they have declared war on us. There is no other way to see it.
I am sick to death, reading about this. Then he has the gall to say something like “Why are you so upset, you ahould be more upset about humans” (um, they also shoot unarmed people, like old sick men). . That’s like someone telling you to finish all the food because kids are starving in Africa. I have news for him, my dogs are part of my family.
This has to stop. That was private property and if the cop had reasonable cause he should have obtained a warrant and contacted the owner. Property rights mean nothing, laws mean nothing, our country is being destroyed and nobody has the backbone to stop it.
Then if they had to go in the back yard, I wonder if they even considered an option other than shooting it, and was the dog even hostile? Is calling animal control not an option?
Who? The Police Chief?
He demands the public be respectful of Officers? How about getting on camera and demanding that Officers be respectful of citizens and the property of citizens?
If the Chief had said that, then the public would be more respectful.
But instead it is defend defend defend and hide behind protocol like cowardly little girls.
I seriously doubt that a Weimeraner presented a clear and present danger to a cop.
This victim is WAY calmer than I would be.
That’s all I will say, other than - learn where your local Revenue Collection Agents/Pooch Pumpers live.

He thinks public reaction is not 'proportionate' yet who doubts he would kill anyone who entered his backyard uninvited and shot his beloved pet in a heartbeat - and be lauded for it by his fellow officers.
That is heartbreaking. I would never do that (rush into a decision) unless some animal was going after me. Either him or me. I wouldn’t like it but I would be going home.

Exigent circumstances. Cops have a long recognized right to enter public property in an emergency such as a fleeing suspect, an observed fire, or in this case a missing child. So they had reason to be in the back yard.
What I don’t get is why the cop didn’t leave, call animal control to capture the dog with the KETCH-ALL tool. Then search the area.

I was always able to drive off barking/charging dogs with a feint towards and a loud noise, at least long enough to extricate myself from the backyard I was entering. I can say almost without a doubt this officer did not need to shoot this dog.
I'll bet 1/2 the big city cops live in My County not the County the big city is in.

Think about it folks... Unless a dog is TRAINED to kill or trained for fighting or stuff like that, what is a housepet gonna do?
It’ll bark and bark and bark. IF you antagonize it, it may nip at you and at worst, bite you real good.
Average housepet dogs will NOT kill you. They do NOT put your life in jeopardy. To shoot a housepet is CRIMINAL and overkill.
Like the owner stated: the proper and logical action for NORMAL people would be to - back out of the fenced yard, shut the gate and call ANIMAL CONTROL - IF you really reaaaally needed to get into that back yard.
It’s a shame but today’s ‘Police’ force are numbskulled Rambo wannabees. Nobody would probably fess up, but I’d bet my last dollar that they are TRAINED to shoot ANY animal in their path. This is standard practice with them.
It’s all about desensitizing the force, like E.Pluribus said, for when they are called upon by our GOVERNMENT, to start offing COMMON CITIZENS who cross their path.
I will say that I AM surprised that they didn’t jump on the owner of the dog when he started getting loud. I’m honestly surprised they didn’t jump him, thump him, cuff him and drag him to jail.
