The Selective Service Just Reminded 14,000 Men Born Between 1893 and 1897 to Register for the Draft

Are you a man born in Pennsylvania between 1893 and 1897? If so, a government agency may have just reminded you to register for the draft.

The Selective Service System, which keeps a roster of potential men who can be enlisted in the military, inadvertently sent out mailings to more than 14,000 Pennsylvania men born in those years, reminding them to register.

These letters were sent due to a computer error, the agency said in a message posted online, and the Selective Service has apologized to the families who have received these letters.

The problem occurred following an automated data transfer between Pennsylvania and the Selective Service, which included the names of the 14,215 men born near the end of the 19th century. The letters started going out on June 30, sent to men who would be at least 117 years old.

“Shuback said that the agency uses a two-digit code for the birth year, which is why the years 1893 to 1897 were mixed up with the years from 1993 to 1997.”

This is a perfect example of the “Y2K” bug in action. Looks like they didn’t get them all.

Does anyone know what one should do if one failed to register because they dropped out in the 10th grade, the draft was no longer in force, and the military was only taking high school graduates, so they figured, what’s the point. Would failure to register affect receiving Social Security 20 years from now?

A computer error? Really? Did it do it all by itself or did somebody help the computer make the mistake?

I’m tired of dealing with fools that don’t pay attention to what they are doing. Damn fools who get paid well to royally screw up.

Ooopsie. I’m sorry. That fixes it all doesn’t it?

How about at least firing someone(s)? Oh never mind, then they would be on the dole and less value than they are now. Sweeping floors, picking up trash, painting rocks? How about that?

(Not registering, by the way, can cost you up to $250,000 and up to five years in prison.)

Somewhere in the Emperor’s thugocracy, is someone trying to figure out a way to collect ...

My very first piece of mail during Cadet basic training at West Point....a threatening letter from the government saying I needed to register.

Even though I was in the army two months after turning 18, I had indeed registered for the draft (and have since checked and verified that it is all in order).

But for some reason, systems failed and I got the letter :(

Classic. They should have sent you a letter threatening to have you court martialed for not registering!

I think the letter listed all the things I wouldn’t be eligible for (student loans, etc.).

Later, I was in the California desert for several weeks, training, when my mail finally caught up to me - from the IRS :(

The owner of Hussein’s SSN was ‘born’ in 1890.

His name = Harrison J Bounel.

He died in 1978.

Based upon this, I think Hussein won’t be hassled by Selective Service.

The Vietnam-era selective service law expired three days after my eighteenth birthday. I was going to sign up, but I called the local office about something, and was told not to bother. By the time the new law was passed, I was too old to have to register.
