Yes, it was on a filed and active IFR flight plan. Russian ATC reported it overdue in checking in at the expected time (as per report from German News source DW)

I found the most peculiar that among some 20,000 airline crews flying daily all over the globe CNN interviewed MH370 crew one day before their "dissapearance".

The joke went over your head. In movies, the directors sometimes use extras for effect. The joke was referring to Malaysia Air being an unwitting extra in the “movie” of armed conflict.
