A Chinese city has been sealed off and 151 people have been placed in quarantine since last week after a man died of bubonic Plague, state media said.

The 30,000 residents of Yumen, in the north-western province of Gansu, are not being allowed to leave, and police at roadblocks on the perimeter of the city are telling motorists to find alternative routes, China Central Television (CCTV) said.

Here's the back story:

Plague first came to the United States in the 1850's. The rail companies were legally importing Chinese coolies to work on the transcontinental railway.

There was a small plague outbreak in San Fransisco's Chinatown district. An alert doctor spotted the outbreak almost immediately, and appealed to the city council to institute a quarantine and rat catching program.

The town fathers refused to believe there was plague in their fair city.

They screwed around long enough for it to infect the local ground squirrel population where there was no hope stopping it from spreading. Thanks to their inaction, now one can be exposed to bubonic plague anywhere in the western US.

Any parallels one wishes to draw with a more recent "gay plague" or flooding the country with disease infected children are left to the reader as an exercise.

Those who do not learn the lessons of the past...

All true. The San Francisco plague was right about 1900, I believe, which is when the organism managed to get into the prairie dog population. Used to be one plague reservoir, in central Asia. Now there are two. WE’RE NUMBER ONE! WE’RE NUMBER ONE!

We do get large numbers of Chinese illegals. We can’t usually deport them either because as I understand it China will not take them back.

***They should kill all the cats in the city.***

The English killed off all the dogs and cats in 1665 to stop the Great Plague. They also lit bonfires to drive off the “bad air”.

It didn’t work. The plague began to wain, then the Great fire afterward cleansed the city of London.

I see there is a plague marker right over the area of NE New Mexico where I was raised.

Last time I was through there I noticed our old house was surrounded by a huge prairie dog town.

As I look closer, I see that EVERYWHERE I lived in NM has a plague marker.

"They also lit bonfires to drive off the “bad air”."

That's where you get the fascinating medical term: "malaria" which literally means: bad air (mal = bad, aria = air).

Turns out, you get Mal-Aria from mosquitoes instead of bad air, unlike airborne diseases. ...but hey, mosquitoes do fly in the...air!

Just read a book online called ‘The Plague’ by Albert Camus - not a bad read - it’s translated from French so it is a little clunky but it gives a good insight into what it might be like living in a closed off community battling the plague and how people might have dealt with it!

No it was a civit cat is a kind of raccoon

Yeah, I think you did. The very thought of killing cats gets someone into the express lane of my bad side.

It was in the ground squirrel population in the caves at Lava Beds Nat. Monument. I think they just DDT-ed the caves.

Scary stuff _ I did see a program a couple of years ago where a few “experts” claimed that some of the Middle Ages outbreaks of plague were not the result of flea bites. I forget what conclusion they came to but the end result was still a lot of dead people!

Where’s the “That’s Racist” boy for the Black Plague?

Can we please quarantine the Black Plague in the White House while we’re at it?

“They should kill all the cats in the city. That will help. And burn some witches.”

Sure glad they don’t seal off whole cities every time someone in Colorado contracts Plague.
