When it comes to environmental regulation compliance, the Department of Homeland Security isnt playing as evidenced by a recent federal raid of a South Carolinians home to confiscate a Land Rover that violated EPA emission rules.
Jennifer Brinkley said she saw a line of law enforcement vehicles approaching her home and wondered what was wrong, the local WBTV reported. Homeland Security agents then went to her 1985 Land Rover Defender and lifted the hood.
They popped up the hood and looked at the Vehicle Identification Number and compared it with a piece of paper and then took the car with them, she said, WBTV reported.
She told Fox News that she was told the agents seized the vehicle because they thought it violated the Clean Air Act though at the time, they werent completely sure. She also said her vehicle was just one of 40 that feds seized in various locations that same day for the same reason.
Ms. Brinkley told Fox News that she has no idea where the vehicle is now and that feds wont tell her.
Im sad because I owned the car. Its just an iconic car. Im in disbelief
and surprised that somebody can come in and take your property, she told Fox News. Its scary, its scary when it happens to you.

they should request asylum for the poor persecuted land rover its just a child looking for a better life...
Because they can.
And because you can't do anything about it, can you, suspect?
Not if they want to keep their jobs.
Maybe I missed it but nowhere in the article mentioned anything about a warrant!
Post 'em if you got 'em.

According to the Car & Driver article, cars older than 25 years are exempt.
Her 1985 Land Rover should, therefore, be exempt. As if grey market cars were killing the planet, anyway.
Another reason to close down the EPA, NHTSA and the Consumer Protection Agency. (Thank you, Ralph Nader - NOT!)
In this day of multiple internet consumer reviews, plus all of the specialty magazines & websites, government censorship of what we can buy is woefully slow to respond to any real problems. Moreover, these capricious governmental regulations stifle innovation and increase costs.
Depends on how long she’s owned it, and whether or not it’s actually a newer model being passed off as over 25 years old.
The problem is that we have lots of voters that dislike big government, but think pollution regulations are a great idea.
As with other cases like that, her neighbors are behind it and using the government to attack her. It’s a dump-on-your-neighbor regime. Someone probably wants her place and is obsessed with making her leave.
“The vehicles are believed to have been imported illegally.”
Thank you. I was wondering if this was a “gray market” vehicle issue.
I understand - no argument with that.
Although it does seem a bit of overkill to send in a DHS SWAT team.
If the current owner was not the one who imported the vehicle why are the Feds going after them? Apparently the gurantees for compensation for the seizing of prperty do not apply. If the vehicle could presumably been imported in 1985 why are the Feds bothering with this now?
