Why is there an asterisk in my FR Search Field (Vanity)

Posted on 08/06/2014 7:55:19 AM PDT by Java4Jay

Help please. There is an asterisk in my FR search field making the task more difficult. What is its purpose, for I have to delete it before pasting or typing a search. Thank you!

I have been deleting it for years because I did not know what it was for.

So that was you??? Do you have any idea what it has cost FR to replace those asterisks? The cost of acquiring new asterisks takes up 17% of the budget, and we've had to change suppliers twice! And you've just been DELETING them?!?!?

Thanks for the info. I only clicked on this post to see how long it would be till someone asked if he was logged on:)
Luckily I read past that because it came pretty quickly:)

So, what you using now?
Chrome is Google
IE is Microsoft
Netscape?.................

I could say Opera but that is by those Norwegians OR I could say some obscure browser that gets updated on a two-year basis whether it needs it or not. However since I am a Mac user, I'm using Safari, so go ahead and hit me with all of the anti-Apple you can. All I will say is that unlike Mozilla, Apple has not really torqued me lately.

It can easily be replaced with a “FReepathoon” or “donate to FR” ascii string, no problem.

Would a “hashtag” be more to your liking?

#donatetofreerepublic

You forgot the licensing fees FR has to pay to the holder of the asterisk patent.

“ixquick.com” with freerepublic included in the search field works well also.

You are overlooking the elephant in the room.

The FR search function is probably the worst in any computer program anywhere and seldom is useful.

At the link I posted there’s a poll question at the bottom of the listings that allows you to vote for the ‘best’ web browser................

As does startpage.com. I use it all the time. For 90% of my searching on FR, I use the link in reply #25.

I apologize if this is a repeat; didn’t read the entire thread.

I strongly suspect the asterisk is in the search field because: 1) it is the wild card character for SQL. 2) The view you see for Latest Posts is simply a search, ordered from most recent that includes all posts, thus the wild card.

Because Babe Ruth did it in a fewer number of searches.

Thanks, I often wondered myself why that was there.

I’m not sure if it is working as intended. It is supposed to act as sort of an in-site url or command line, search for do:pings and it’ll pull up your pings. The default text is a demo of the “command” that brings up that page. It should clear when it initially gains focus with the default text, and it ideally should have an accesskey to give it focus, I was on a mouse-free kick once... Whether or not any of that is actually coded is another matter (!) (I may have accidentally broken it at one time.)

The idea is questionable, it’s what happens when coders are in charge of user-interface design lol. I’ll probably make the text go away since it’s more trouble than it’s worth.

I am so sorry, please tell me where to send the check. I will go forth and delete no more.
