Confessions of a disillusioned Democrat
Washington Times ^ | 8-15-14 | Joe Piscopo

Posted on 08/15/2014 2:48:55 AM PDT by afraidfortherepublic

I’m a Democrat. I’ve been a Democrat my entire life.

I used to utter those two sentences with pride and would shout them from the highest rooftops. Now, I’m almost embarrassed to say those words.

I almost can’t articulate my political affiliation in public (or on the radio) without immediately offering an apology and an explanation.

How did I get here?

I’ve been asking myself that question a lot lately. The more I ask it, the more I come to the realization that I haven’t changed all that much. Sure, I’m a little older … OK, a lot older. I have a few more children (one at every exit in New Jersey). I am also a little closer to collecting Social Security than I might’ve been a few years ago. However, in examining the current state of world affairs and the political landscape, the more I realize that the Democratic Party has changed far more than I have.

Contrary to popular belief, my first exposure to Democratic politicians wasn’t when I played Jimmy Carter in my first episode of “Saturday Night Live.” I’ve always been a political junkie and followed politics, the way my friends followed sports. My parents never told me where they were politically or where I should be. They encouraged an independent streak, a healthy skepticism of authority, coupled with a large dose of common sense and a love of country that was all-consuming.

My father was a proud Italian-American, but the American was second to no other nationality. “Pop” was a World War II veteran and a brilliant lawyer who devoted his professional life representing the working class, particularly new legal immigrants.

The problem is the Democratic Party shifted left to the Progressive/Socialist side. Now they crave power and not to help the working man. Why else would they undercut union jobs by bringing in illegal cleap labor?

I used to utter those two sentences with pride and would shout them from the highest rooftops. Now, I’m ALMOST embarrassed to say those words.

That party died when you were in grade school, chum. Some of us have known them all along. Better late than never, I guess, except for the damage you cheerily went along with in the 70's, the 80's, the 90's.....

Enjoy your IRS audit.

From the link:

I was a Democrat because I believed in civil rights, like Lyndon Johnson. I was a Democrat because while it was clear to me that the Republican politicians were out of touch and cared for only the upper class.

Idiot. How do ya like Johnson now, or have you figured out the reasons all for yourself?

BTW, that civil rights legislation was initially championed by the REPUBLICANS, filibustered by the Democrats, co-opted by the Democrats as a vote buying flim-flam and still passed with more REPUBLICAN votes.

Care to try again, unfunny man? Take the next exit. You're still asleep.

“My father was a proud Italian-American, but the American was second to no other nationality. “Pop” was a World War II veteran”

Interesting, my grandfather followed that path too except it was WW1. His comment about the dems were they were like commies and fascists whom he despised and left Italy to get away from.

“Why else would they undercut union jobs by bringing in illegal cleap labor?”

Simple answer for that is...there are no(few members) labor unions left that do physical labor. They are government employee unions.

What does a flood of illegals do? Greatly expand the need for more government is what!

The first step to limited government is crushing the unions. They need to be stomped into the ground a swept into the dust bin of history.

Sounds to me as though he finds his arguments sound but will be casting his votes for Democrats, yet again, this fall.

“...and still passed with more REPUBLICAN votes.”

A greater percentage of Republicans voted for it is more accurate. There weren’t nearly as many in elected office back then.

A died in the wool Marxist is now disappointed Marxism doesn’t work. None of his explanation holds water and continues to bash Republicans with lies.

Pray America wakes up

The up side to his commentary is that he WAS a big Hillary supporter in the 2008. He is now starting to see life without the blinders and in such will now be their worst ideological enemy as his new-found enlightenment to reality moves forward. I would submit it was Hillary’s book tour debacle that set it off along with the feckless Obama charades.

Just like those of us who no longer support the GOPe ideologues, it took having one too many crap sandwiches forced upon us to take our blinders off as well.

Jimmy Carter created more Republicans than any RNC chairman in history, let’s hope O’bastard can break his record in that too.

I would go back and say the underhanded way that Nixon lost the 1960 race....probably set the dynamics in place for a dozen events which have reshaped American society in a negative way.

Disillusioned? To be factual....Republican leaders are no longer Republican....they support lobbyists and special interest groups. The same is virtually true for Democrats. All of this....from some dopey decisions made since 1960.

That is my grandfather’s story, also.
