When I joined the Navy it was illegal to be homosexual, then it became optional. I retired before it became mandatory.

It just isn’t the same Navy anymore...it just isn’t.

I wonder why our fearless leader is castrating the military.

I’m ready. I spent 5 years in the Navy and know the role chiefs serve.

You have a point. There is no guarantee that the replacements won’t be selected because of their political correctness on homosexuality and position on women on combat ships.

It you're an E-7 with 26yrs, time to go.

He probably knows little about anything besides Navy Culture.

The folks keeping the ship running and effective are E-1 - E-6...or rapidly advancing to E-8 and 9.

Exactly. Even E-6s do little hands-on labor. The only thing you are likely to see in a chief’s hand is a coffee mug. It is the young E-1s through E-5s who perform all the maintenance tasks that keep the ships moving and the aircraft flying. The chiefs supervise the running of the shop and may assign specific tasks.

I know enough to know that there is NO ONE who is indispensable. There are thousands of qualified E-6s who are passed over each year because of limited E-7 slots.

With a smaller Navy it's necessary to make room for others to advance.

Sure, there's an ESSENTIAL role for leadership. When I served on an LHA there were 4 Chiefs (E7 and E8) in the Communications Dept. PLUS the CommO and 5 E-6. That's pretty top-heavy for 50 man team.

And none of the Chief's actually DID anything besides hang out, sign the Watch Rotations developed by the E-6's.

Worse, none of them was current on the technology of the day.

But man 0 man they could tell stories about whoring in Subic Bay!

LOL! Yep, that is my experience with chiefs. Their main talents were telling sea stories and drinking coffee.

The personal attack is unwarranted. I knew quite quickly that a Navy career was not for me. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t learn all about chiefs and their role in the Navy.

My 34-year-old son told me this past weekend that one of his high-school buddies just made chief so I’m glad for him that a slot was there. OTOH, there is no way that every one of these 8000 is marginal or non-performing. The USN will sorely miss some of them.
