OK, so will the public education industry begin treating boys and girls as students and not boy students and girl students now?

Didn't think so.

More than 35 percent of the city's third-through-eighth-grade girls passed the state math test, up from 30 percent last year which was the first year of the harder tests aligned to federal Common Core standards. For boys, 33.4 percent passed this year's test, up from last year's 29.3 percent.

Not noted is how many of each group are in the top 3-5 percentile bracket, which is where all the physicists, engineers, mathematicians and technologists live. The usual ratio is at least 3-to-1 in favor of males.

Yeah, but its in the early HS years that boys hit their stride. I also wonder what the stats look like when broken down by ethnicity.

It is no secret that women are outperforming and displacing men in all levels of education excluding a few heavily mathematical field like engineering and physics. We are slowly moving towards a matriarchy where formerly working class men are reduced to a poor, destitute, criminal class. More and more blue collar men sit at home with kids while college educated wife works.

Men are more independent and competitive, women are more cooperative and have better communication skills. Modern America has no use for brave, courageous, independent men; it wants a society of obedient drones. Women serve this purpose better than us Y chromosome relics.

Common core math is language bound. Precision is not important/rationalizing process answers is emphasized.

wanna know why boys cant do math anymore? math is now all reading. my sons (poor readers in lower grades) suffered in math classes - not because they couldn’t do arithmetic - but because the problems were ALL words, with a cultural connection attached.

So, little Johnny is trying to do his math homework, but gets stumped at the first sentence.....’the gobbledegook tribe in the montebumaka forest are led by chief whatshisname.’ By the second paragraph, you are asked to figure how many nuts each of the villagers collected.

So, the way to get girls to perform better in math - is to change it to reading!

So many boys end up at the bottom of the class, and in some schools, its practically impossible to get college prep classes once you’re in the lower half of the class.

since the early 90s, boys math has been neglected by the teachers union on hilary’s say-so.

this is just the latest result.

There is a big difference between doing “math” and doing trigonometry and calculus.

OK, so how do we help the 85% who failed?

I don’t believe this. I know many smart women who are good at math,(I am not one of them) but I know many more men who are good at math. Although, if this is true, the fault no doubt lies with the NY school systems who are more focused on teaching kids how to put condoms on fruit than teaching kids how to count fruit.

The issue is the grade range - its clear that people who can’t understand why boys aren’t doing as well in grades 3-8, don’t have boys in grades 3-8. School is not on their radar at all and getting by with the least amount of effort is the goal so they can get outside to play. Boys start recognizing the importance of school later (I hope! - as the mother of 11 year old and 9 year old boys) which seems to be confirmed by the fact (mentioned in the article) that boys do better than girls on the math SAT which they take when they are juniors and seniors in high school.

Lisa Randall of Harvard comes to mind contemporaneously. But then, she’s a physicist. Yet one has to be pretty up on math as a string theorist.

Then there’s Sophie Germain of an earlier age.

This society has turned into an “Atta girl society”, and a “stop it!” society when it comes to girls and boys.

Will anyone link these stats to the recent events in Ferguson? Males - black and white, but the black underclass feels it first - are losing their traditional role as providers. Their solution to affirm themselves as people and as men? Gangs and crime, with sports and entertainment as an option for the supremely gifted. The solution? I don’t know.
