~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Bragg, North Carolina

Fort Bragg is a major United States Army installation located in Cumberland, Hoke, Harnett and Moore counties, North Carolina, mostly in Fayetteville but also partly in the town of Spring Lake.

The fort is named for Confederate general Braxton Bragg. It covers over 251 square miles. It is the home of the US Army airborne forces and Special Forces, as well as U.S. Army Forces Command and U.S. Army Reserve Command.

Fort Bragg, NC absorbed FORSCOM (Forces Command) and USARC (US Army Reserve Command) from Fort McPherson, GA in 2011 as an outcome of the 2005 BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure Commission).

Fort Bragg retained its name and increased its population by 25,000. The consolidation made Fort Bragg the largest US Army command for sustained forces capable of worldwide crisis response.

There are 29,183 people, 4,315 households, and 4,215 families residing on the base. The base is the one of the main garrisons for deployments to IRAQ & Afghanistan wars. The units based at the mission have conducted two, three, or even four or more deployments to combat zones in IRAQ & Afghanistan.

Fort Bragg is tasked to maintain America’s Contingency Corps as a strategic crisis response force manned and trained to deploy rapidly by air, sea, and land anywhere in the world with the ability to fight upon arrival. The major units are XVIII Airborne Corps, 82nd Airborne Division, The Golden Knights, FORSCOM and USARC.

Tenant organizations at Fort Bragg include MEDDAC (Medical Command), Womack Army Medical Center, Special Forces, and John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School.

It is interesting how many Army bases are named after Confederate Generals.

Just off hand I can think of several. Fort Hood, Fort A P Hill, Fort Lee, Fort Bragg, Fort Stewart, (Is there a Fort Jackson?).

Don’t forget Fort Gordon, GA, named after Gen. John B. Gordon.

I was just wondering about that. I am supposedly descended from one of Jackson’s cousins.

I once saw a picture of General Gordon’s wife. She was strikingly beautiful. I think Gordon was shot 9 times in a battle and thanks to his wife’s care he survived.

Bragg and Polk were an interesting pair. Braxton Bragg was an incredibly profane man. Polk, an Episcopal bishop, would not permit a swear word to pass his lips.

Just before a battle, Bragg urged his men to give the Yankees hell. Polk said, "Now you boys give the Yankees just what General Bragg said."

I had always assumed that Fort Stewart was named after J.E.B. Stewart or is it Stuart?

General Early was one of those coarse, profane soldiers who cursed constantly. Due to the influence of Lee and Jackson, he ended the war a devout Christian.

Andrew. I once read that half the South claims some kinship to Andrew Jackson so don’t really know.
