For sale: Systems that can secretly track where cellphone users go around the globe

Makers of surveillance systems are offering governments across the world the ability to track the movements of almost anybody who carries a cellphone, [snip]

The technology works by exploiting an essential fact of all cellular networks: They must keep detailed, up-to-the-minute records on the locations of their customers to deliver calls and other services to them. Surveillance systems are secretly collecting these records to map people’s travels over days, weeks or longer, according to company marketing documents and experts in surveillance technology.

The world’s most powerful intelligence services, such as the National Security Agency and Britain’s GCHQ, long have used cellphone data to track targets around the globe. But experts say these new systems allow less technically advanced governments to track people in any nation — including the United States — with relative ease and precision.

Users of such technology type a phone number into a computer portal, which then collects information from the location databases maintained by cellular carriers, company documents show. In this way, the surveillance system learns which cell tower a target is currently using, revealing his or her location to within a few blocks in an urban area or a few miles in a rural one.

It is unclear which governments have acquired these tracking systems, but one industry official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to share sensitive trade information, said that dozens of countries have bought or leased such technology in recent years. This rapid spread underscores how the burgeoning, multibillion-dollar surveillance industry makes advanced spying technology available worldwide.

“Any tin-pot dictator with enough money to buy the system could spy on people anywhere in the world,” said Eric King, deputy director of Privacy International, a London-based activist group that warns about the abuse of surveillance technology. “This is a huge problem.”

One fold should do it. Experiment.

The “Secret Pocket” mentioned above has a zipper to close the bag.

I believe they make it possible for government agencies to do it, but they also make it possible for the private sector to do it. To what extent that is taking place, I don’t know. Perhaps it isn’t. I suspect it probably is. I could be wrong.

That information is a technical reality, but he release of it to government or private agencies is not a necessity. It is a choice. It should be proprietary and your sign off should be required before anyone can have access to it.

Thanks so much for taking the time for the info! I basically use the phone for emergencies. The information regarding what is being emitted from them is troubling.

As usual, you have completely misread what I posted.

But as usual I expected you to do so. If you recall, I already told you that I got a dumb phone and pay by the minute.

I also told you that I receive, on occasion, phone calls that I do no answer but are designed, I believe to locate me. Since it does not matter if I answer it or not, the only solution is to either not have one at all, or yank the battery until I need it.

Which is what I do...

As to steve and woz, I was in error...It was around 77. I had started to work for the company in 75, and I was older than 20. I just don’t have a good memory of the dates..I was in and out of the state with this company.

Woz was OK....in fact if you read his body language, he was embarrassed about his partners behavior that day.

Yes, they were doing a demo of their computer...big boxy thing. They pushed it around on a cart.

Job’s acted like a prick, and he was a prick. He was rude, and obnoxious. Acted like we were a bunch of North Florida goobers.

If anyone has a problem, it’s you. You are a Apple psychopath!

You need a doctor..not a phone.

If I should want further entertainment I will ping you again. You at least, do that well...

Cold, now you claim you met both Steve and Woz. . . which doesn't jive with history. The Apple I was not a "big boxy thing," it was a board, and Woz did not go on sales calls, and the entire run of Apple I was sold on a hand shake without a demo because the buyer saw the demo at the Home Brew Computer Club where my nephew was a member.

The original Apple 1 demo model built by Steve Wozniak and
shown by Woz and Steve Jobs at the Home Brew Computer Club

Later, sales of the Apple II were initiated at the West Coast Computer show, and it was NOT a "big boxy thing" requiring being pushed around on a cart. Again Woz did not go on sales calls. . . especially of the Apple II. That makes no sense.

The original 1977 Apple II was not "big boxy computer" like the
IBM desk top computers. It was 15" Wide by 18" Deep by 5.5" High.

Steve could be rude and obnoxious, but when he was selling he was not. His reputation for being rude and obnoxious came from his treatment of employees. . . not customers. Otherwise the company would have gone no where.

Frankly, Cold, I simply do not believe you. You are posting FUD.

You come off as rude and obnoxious to anyone who prefers Apple products.

Well F you 2...buddy....

By the way, I did meet them, otherwise I would not have known Job’s was a self promoting A-hole.

They both had beards...as I said the stuff was on a big cart..I helped them get it inside ...too big to take upstairs so the management had to come down to the studio.

I don’t recall a open board...what I saw, and it was long ago, looked more like this..

http://www.macgeek.org/museum/applelisa1/apple1_00.jpg

But the cart had a second shelf on it, and what was on top was a old first generation word processor like keyboard and a small monitor.

I am trying to find a pic of the thing. I saw it several years ago in some old file pics that were on a website..But I can’t find it now and I will keep looking..

The picture even had woz and Jobs in it. The machine, was not the Lisa, but I don’t remember if they gave it a name. As I said, it could have had a open board but you need to understand that we were a media and retail outfit and were looking for something to track inventory and billing at the time.

IF I FIND IT, I’LL SEND IT TO YA, THERE...GOOD BUDDY.

I left that company in 1979 after a divorce. I recall the incident occurred about two years prior to my leaving which after thinking about it would have been in late 77..or early 78

I guess big boxy things in your world are like the old fish eye TVs’

They did have it stacked...

Could well have been the early version of the apple II..

It did use a cassette player as was the practice then.

There was other stuff on the cart but the big boxy thing I refer to was the keyboard and processor in one package. It looked like one of those old word processors by commodore.

Anyway, I ain’t trying to give you a bunch of crap. I don’t care enough about you to waste the time to do that and it’s not my habit to do so. I can exaggerate a situation that happened years ago like a fish story, but I don’t make them up.

They did show up at the office and studio, they did try to sell us a Apple computer and the boss was not impressed, nor was his personal secretary. They asked me to show them out, which I did, and then job’s started cussing at me while Woz just stood their embarrassed and red faced. I have not forgotten it because my broker, a few years later wanted me to buy some apple stock and I told him the story and said I would not own the crap for love or money.

Now would you not remember that?

I have tried to forget it but I can’t. because if I had done what my broker wanted me to do??????

Well...lets just say that because of what he did, I missed a opportunity.

BTW, I still refuse to buy apple stock.

I see. . . and I see your picture. That's an Apple Lisa, under developed in 1981-1983, so sometime in 1980s, the CEO of Apple computer, one of the top computer companies in the world, and one of the most famous computer designers, come to some company you don't name, to personally push their products? Nope, wrong time frame.

You implied your company was in North Florida . . . they never marketed the Apple I anywhere but Mountain View, Ca, and it is certain that Wozniak DID NOT go on sales calls across the country because he was director of development in California and was not a salesmen, ever. He refused. He did not like getting out from behind his workbench. Steve only pitched the Apple I to computer hobbyist and computer component stores. . . because they originally saw as their market as the "build your own computer hobbyist," the geeks who wanted something more than an Altair where you did your programming with switches and got your answers back from digital numbers.

Original Apple II with cassette drive and TV as display

So let's say it was the Apple II set up. After the debut at the West Coast Computer fair, Apple II's became the best selling personal computer in the world. From the June 10, 1977, release date, they were flying off the shelf, and Apple was selling every one they could make. The Disk II floppy drive, designed by Steve Wozniak, was offered by April 1978. From November through April, Wozniak was certainly involved completely in the design and development through manufacture of the drive, not out pushing computers with Steve. So your late 1977 to early 1978 time window seems correct for what you describe. But, Cold, Apple had people called a SALES STAFF selling the product, but certainly not CEO Steve Jobs and Chief Design Engineer Steve Wozniac making personal calls on businesses pushing it.

Try this Apple II — does this look more like what you recall?

Unless your company was a major business with the potential for large purchases, Jobs would not have been there doing what you describe. Steve did not go out trying to sell single computers to individual businesses, his sales staff did that. He met with and sold to STORES selling computers. . . or major businesses buying computers. In fact, at that times, Apple did not sell direct, but referred you to an Apple partner. That's why your story does not seem ring true. There are so many things wrong with it. I don't know who the guys were that came to your business, but it just doesn't sound right.

I have tried to forget it but I can’t. because if I had done what my broker wanted me to do??????

Well...lets just say that because of what he did, I missed a opportunity.

I was wondering why you had such an anger toward Apple. . . now you reveal it. You made a bad investment decision and realize you'd have been in a better financial decision if you had bought Apple back when it was under $10 a share, before five splits. . . and you're kicking yourself for doing that. You have to blame someone. If you had bought $10,000 (100 shares at $10) back in 1980, it would be worth $568,624.00 at today's close. Yeah, I'd be mad too.

You are wasting your time and the readers by trying to divine why they would be where I said they were.

Maybe they were enjoying the beach?

Maybe they were there for a sales pitch to the Navy and decided to fill their time with a few more sales calls.

Whatever the case, Jobs was having a bad day.
