mike huckabee to conservatives: 'stop the fight' over common core
Breitbart News ^ | 08/24/2014 | DR. SUSAN BERRY

On Friday Fox News host and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) called on conservatives to “stop the fight” over the Common Core standards and, instead, consider the positive effects the nationalized standards might have on students in poor-performing schools.

As ABC News reports, Huckabee, considered to be a 2016 presidential hopeful, was addressing the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC) in Washington, a group that includes over 40,000 churches and 16 million evangelical Hispanics.

In February, the NHCLC announced its endorsement of the Common Core standards and its plans to launch a nationwide campaign to salvage the increasingly unpopular initiative. On September 7, the group’s pastors plan to pitch the controversial standards initiative to their congregations during their sermons.

“I don’t support what Common Core has become in many states or school districts,” Huckabee told his Fox News audience last December. “Look, I’m dead set against the federal government creating a uniform curriculum for any subject. I oppose the collection of personal data on students that would identify them and then track them, and certainly any effort to give that personal information to the federal government.”

Just one month earlier, however, Huckabee urged the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), one of the creators and owners of the Common Core standards, to get rid of the “Common Core” name because it had become “toxic.”

“Rebrand it, refocus it, but don’t retreat,” Huckabee told the CCSSO.

By calling on conservatives to “stop the fight” against standards for which support across the country is plummeting, Huckabee is casting himself squarely as an establishment candidate, against potential GOP candidates who know that the Common Core initiative will lead to greater federal control of education and less control by state legislatures and local school districts and parents.

The name Common Core was already a re-branding. Centralized data collection and planning is called Communism. Leftists always think they're on to something new when actually it's the same failed ideas over and over again.

Uber Nanny-Stater Huckabee (R(eprehensible)) has spoken.

Stop fighting the central planning, Soviet style mandates and just do what you’ve been told.

He p!$$ed off true conservatives when he was governor of Arkansas mainly because he did not get it.

I cannot get to the radio or the TV switch and turn him off fast enough when I hear his voice.

I don’t think he’s living in the real world. Or has ANY exposure to it, at all.

The reason we’re winning on Common Core is that even Liberals hate it. Or at least Liberal parents who try to help their kids with new math processes so complex and convoluted that even they don’t understand what’s going on with simple addition, subtraction, division and multiplication problems.

I haven’t met a single parent, Conservative, Liberal, Whatever, that has Bern exposed to Common Core math and doesn’t despise it.

IMHO someone should shove their kid’s Common Core math homework in Hucksbee’s face, dare him to try to do it and when he fails see if he’s still willing to defend it.

Common core sucks. Take it from someone who’s experienced it, no from some Democrat lapdog who wants education to be substandard.

I totally agree. There is nothing conservative about federal control of education either.

It’s an automatic channel clicker for me. Not much on TV when he fills the screen, but I’d rather endure the mating rituals of humpback whales on the Animal Planet than listen to the Huckster jowel on about anything.

He gives RINOS a good name because he is a rino and wants the word banned.

He gives preachers, and Baptists in general, a bad name. I’m sick and tired of churches getting in bed with the government.

It’s not the schools - it’s the students.

This is very important to disclose, and yet no one, NOT ONE PERSON, is willing to actually admit this simple truth!

This reminds me of when one of my daughters was about to start Junior High. The school district had been realigned and we were now going to be in one of the "worst schools" in town. There was a new vice principal, a retired Marine, who came to each of the feeder elementary schools and gave a GREAT speech to the students and (more importantly) to the parents. Basically, he stated that he wanted everyone to drive by their future school over the summer and report all the bad things that the school was doing, i.e., drugs, fights, gang affiliation, etc... And what he pointed out is that come the first of the new school year he would bet that there were ZERO reports on that school doing drugs, getting into a fight or being gang affiliated because the school was just a building. And those other items were caused by the students and parents who brought those ills into the school. So, if you don't want to be a part of the "worst school" in town, then don't bring all those things in with you!

Some parents complained in the local paper, that the principal was blaming the problems on the students. But more parents responded in the Op-Ed that actually he was correct - those ills were caused by the students and the parents who allow those things to happen (and those parents who protest about blaming the guilty kids).

That was a new beginning for that school; within four years he was the principal and that school was no longer considered a bad school!

Working against Common Core is something that actually unites many on the left and the right, is clearly an unambiguous political winner, and is also the right thing to do.

So tin-eared Goober T. Dipshit says we should stay away from it, naturally.

Huck must really be out of it. The fight over Common Core is white hot and will only get hotter.

In theory a common set of national standards is a rational idea. In practice I trust Washington, DC to formulate them about as far as I could throw that Jimmy out in the parking lot.
