Michael Sam, who became the first openly gay football player to be drafted by an NFL team, has made waves in just three preseason games. But on a surprisingly deep St. Louis roster, Sam's spot is hardly guaranteed.
"Hes no different than any other late-round pick or college free agent that we have. Hes just trying to make this team, Rams coach Jeff Fisher said in his office the other day. We have a reality that we can only keep so many players at that position. Is he better than that fourth or fifth defensive end? Right now, I cant answer that.

Careful there Jeff, if you cut him the DO(I)J might visit from nearby Ferguson to launch a federal investigation into your ‘discrimination’.
“He sacked Johnny Football!”
I’d keep him just for sacking Johnny Clipboard.
He could make a lot of touchdowns with all the straight players running away.
he could try for team seamstress
I like that you’re willing to discuss this. As a Head Football Coach, I can tell you from first hand experience that within reason, Coaches just want to win. Period.
If this guy can play, he’ll make the team. If 3 or 4 other guys are better, he won’t. I’ve dealt with some players that are “head cases”, “trouble makers”, “projects whatever you want to call them...
The bottom line is, they can PLAY. They make a difference. Despite whether I like them personally or not, they play becauase it puts my team in a position to win.
If he sucks, he should be booted. Ooops, probably a bad choice of words, but so be it! :-)
The pressure will be on the Cowboys to pick him up, because they are widely recognized as having the worst defense in the NFL.
Having a gay on the team is small potatoes compared to the real thugs they employ.
Good post. Fisher is getting >$7 million per year. He wants to win. Now that’s going to be really tough with Bradford out for the year but...
Ugh...I’m a Cowboys fan, but you make a good point. That defense is so depleted.
Remember though, Jimmy Johnson won a lot of Super Bowls with undersized really fast linebackers.
I think Bradford being out of the season may very well had sealed Sam’s fate on the Rams, they don’t have the luxury that they did before.
RACISTS!
wait....
HOMOPHOBES!
or is it both?
Damn. Where’s my wallet chart?
Now I don’t see Jerry doing it, he doesn’t come across to me as a guy who’s very “progressive” in that area.
But I do expect Dale Hansen and company to whine if they Cowboys don’t take him.
He was picked LAST in the draft. That means he was iffy all along.
Sams is confused. He CLAIMS to be a “Defensive End”, when the evidence suggests he’s a Wide Reciever. . . .
And the good news is, if there is a guy who is capable of taking a bunch of spares and make them a decent unit, it is Marinelli. But I don’t think even he will be able to do much with what they have right now.
Ok, no more tight end or wide receiver jokes. They make me want to spit.
