Today's news of a coming bloodbath at CNN and HLN is a reminder that while CNN has been able to use the unrest in Ferguson to race-bait its way to better ratings, everyone knows that's temporary.
Without something that allows the left-wing network to appeal to the lowest common denominator, CNN is almost certain to fall back into the ratings basement until something else comes along for the network to cynically exploit. So here come the layoffs and buyouts.
In the headline, The Wrap describes these layoffs as "imminent':
Some 550 buyouts are to be offered at Time Warner's Turner network this week, including a large number of those at CNN and HLN, which will lead to layoffs if they are not taken voluntarily, according to an individual with knowledge of the network's plans.
The buyouts will come across the Turner division, with a couple of hundred expected at CNN and HLN, the individual said.
A CNN spokeswoman had no immediate comment.
HLN has been struggling in the ratings, regularly finishing fourth in total viewers and in primetime across the key cable news demo, viewers 25-54. It did edge out MSNBC in the demo across a total day measurement in 2014's second quarter.
CNN's ratings have been doing well during times of big, national breaking news but the cable news net regularly ranks far behind Fox News and battles with MSNBC probably more than it would prefer. This fits with a report from the Atlanta Journal Constitution Monday that
CNN chief Jeff Zucker is preparing staffers for the bloodletting:
CNN chief Jeff Zucker recently shared not so encouraging words with some of the news operations employees, many of whom have been bracing for potential jobs cuts.

Most likely they are buying a cable package sold by Time-Warner.
How about firing everyone and starting over with robots. They would have more credibility and better personalities.
COOL!
Oh, wait. Nevermind.
It’s not a REAL bloodbath, just some idiots getting fired.
I don’t understand this at all.
Why not just raise the salaries of each of these employees so that CNN can be more profitable and everybody’s job will be safe?
I don't even recognize it anymore. I could watch Lynne Russell for four hours straight once upon a time.
Pitched the TV out in 2000, haven't watched since, except in a motel this spring.
Couldn't believe they had some harpie named "grace" nattering on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about something.
BSNBC and Jon Leibowitz took all their moonbats.
They ruined a perfectly good and useful network to fulfill their ideological dreams. Now it’s just another liberal PC show network...................
Finally some good news. Christmas is here early.
Ya, HLN has morphed into something else.
Years ago, it was CNN Headline News, with a new newscast every half hour. Then it became just Headline News, abbreviated to HLN. But instead of news, they have shows such as Nancy Grace sensationalizing crime stories in the news. It’s just not the same network anymore.
When they changed format, I immediately stopped watching. Haven’t watched since...................
She was on KENS-tv in San Antonio before moving to HLN.
She had a book called How to Win Friends, Kick Ass, and Influence People.
My kind of lady.
lack of viewers has consequences
O’Reilly won’t have CNN to kick around any more.
Yes-there was a time when I went to HLN for their news— when they reported just the news. Then Fox came along. There are times when FNC is doing reruns that I wish HLN was still there, but it is a nothing now. You’d think CNN would smarten up, but they just don’t get it.
There are times when FNC is broadcasting Huckabee that I wish HLN was still there...................
Why is it that it seems mandatory that cnn has to be on at airports, hospitals, etc?”
I asked that at the place where I have my oil changed and at one of the airport waiting areas and was told it was because CNN provided the TV sets and it is part of their corporate contract. Don’t know if it’s true or not but seems plausible.
