Dan Rather: If you’re calling for war against ISIS and wouldn’t send your kid, don’t even talk to me

He also said he’d pay a ransom for a reporter’s life, which, as a better journalist noted elsewhere today, is a surefire way to encourage more kidnappings and beheadings.

This is, of course, a variation on the ol’ chickenhawk argument vintage 2003 and it’s stupid for all of the reasons the chickenhawk argument was always stupid. But say this much for Document Dan: You haven’t heard much of this quasi-logic from the left since January 2009. He may be consistently silly, but he’s consistent. (Meanwhile, over at MSNBC, professional liberal and Iraq dove Ed Schultz wants “round-the-clock airstrikes” against ISIS so that we can “cut their g******ed head off.”) Never mind all that, though. Answer me this: What’s the strategic argument for not hitting ISIS at this point? I understand the broad anti-interventionist argument that nothing good ever came from America meddling in Iraq, but that argument imagines that U.S. intervention necessarily makes things worse. What would be worse than ISIS? The strategic argument, I guess, is that we’re inviting “blowback” by bombing them but in that case explain to me why ISIS would refrain from attacking the U.S. if we held off. They hate America already for backing comparatively moderate Middle Eastern regimes like Iraq’s and Jordan’s (not to mention Israel’s). They’d boost their prestige regionally by showing they could pull off a big attack on U.S. soil that’s eluded Al Qaeda for years. There was never going to be a peace treaty with a group that’s devoted explicitly to ethnic and religious cleansing.

If the argument is that it’s not our fight and that regional powers should handle this, okay, but I’m not sure that’s feasible at this point even if those powers were willing. ISIS might have them outgunned:

In 1954, Rather enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, but was soon discharged because of having had rheumatic fever as a child...

Why do liberals think parents “send their kids” to war????? You must be an adult to sign up for service, not a kid. The parents don’t make that decision! But no one ever questions them when they spew this bogus claptrap.

Dan Rather was a high school graduate when the Korean War broke out, he enlisted in the Marines in 1954, after it was over.

College would have kept him out of the draft during the war, while the Marines drafted for the war, by 1954, it was probably very easy to get out during basic, since they were probably reducing forces.

I would love to see an investigation into that several years history and discharge.

Dear Dan,

Islam is at war against us. We didn't start it. Losing would lead to unthinkable consequences for everyone's children.

If you can't get those basic facts though your head, then perhaps it would be best if you reserved comment yourself.

Sincerely,
Ben

"Calling" for a war?? Is Dan senile already? We are at war with them you idiot whether we want to be or not, whether it is declared or not. And we should not send any foot soldiers in. If it was up to me that whole freakin' area would be converted into glass with a speech given afterwards "If Islamic radicals kill one more person then we blow off another."

That rheumatic fever excuse is pretty flimsy, he would have had to get past everything prior to Basic, to suddenly bring it up in Basic training.

By that rule, those who pay no taxes shouldn’t get to determine where tax money is spent. remove their vote.

By the same token, those who send their kids to private schools should not oppose school vouchers and/or the freedom for anyone to choose the school their kids go to.

AND, those who want to ban private ownership of firearms should be barred from hiring bodyguards or home-security services.

RE: I’d agree with that sentiment.

But what if you don’t want to send your son but HE wanted to go anyway? He can only join the military if he’s an adult.
