British Embassy holds a party to commemorate anniversary of the burning of the White House

British diplomats in the US have been forced to apologise after revealing they were hosting a party to celebrate the anniversary of the burning of the White House.

The British Embassy in Washington held a ‘White House barbeque’ yesterday to mark the two hundredth anniversary of Britain capturing the US capital and setting fire to the President’s iconic address.

The Embassy even sent a message on Twitter from its official account with a photograph of a White House cake, flanked by British and American flags and surrounded by sparkler fireworks.

We should hold a party commemorating the Battle of New Orleans where British suffered the most lopsided of all defeats, ironically after the war was officially over.

Go for it. Should be a heck of a party!

Though I do think it’s a tad deeper. Can you imagine this happening under ANY other president? I can’t. The USA and the UK are like siblings. Mostly get along. We were the big brother at one time, then you guys grew up to be a 7 foot tall MMA fighter.

Read comments on another source about the tweets and the cake. Most were “get over it” because of Brit humor (with which I totally agree).

Ironically, I watched the John Adams HBO series last weekend and then read about the burning. A post from Free Republic mentioned the storm that came up and put out the fire.

Today, don’t know if God would do the same.

“One can imagine the thought that comes to mind.”

Indeed. We promise to look the other way.

My son-in-law is from England, now an American citizen. He told us that in England they call the Fourth of July the Day of Good Riddance. We laughed. No hard feelings at all. They are still our mother country, closer to us than any other people.

Plus, one must take the English sense of humor , and history, into account. They still celebrate Guy Fwalkes day. It’s all in good fun, as you say.

Let' see now, 0bammy:

1) Returned the Churchill bust.
2) Gave a CD of Movie classics to a legally blind PM
3) Gave the Queen a CD of his own speeches

This sums up Obama and his feelings for the brits:

And the Brits response is pretty much the same.

I think it’s great that some group of government employees out there still have a sense of humor.

The White House and all other government buildings were legitimate targets during the War of 1812. The British burned it in retaliation for American forces burning a British town in present day Canada. There’s nothing for the British embassy to regretful about. After all, that was 200 years ago. That was also the last time we fought each other... except for the Pig War on San Juan Island, but only the pig died then.

I posted on FB that ha, ha, this was funny but I hope they keep their sense of humour on June 6th when we have a cake with a donkey on it, commemorating the day we saved their ass! Ha!

So they were forced to apologise then? Shame. I would have thought the fact that we felt comfortable to banter with the Americans like this as buddies do was the sign that we were close enough allies for this to be taken with good humour. Sadly, it appears that a significant number of humourless jerks ruined the joke. Back to boring, stiff formality I suppose as with most other nations I suppose. The Aussies actually have a sense of humour, we should probably confine our joshing to them and a couple of other Commonwealth nations from now on...

so some have a sense of humor and now they have to say sorry.
People today are too quick to say sorry and to quick to be outraged.

“We should hold a party commemorating the Battle of New Orleans where British suffered the most lopsided of all defeats, ironically after the war was officially over.”

The Treaty of Ghent had been signed on Christmas Eve 1814, and ratified by Parliament on 30 December 1814. But it had no force until official word crossed the Atlantic and the treaty was ratified by the US Senate, which transpired on 18 February 1815. British forces under Gen Edward Pakenham attacked New Orleans on 8 January 1815; thus New Orleans became the final major land action.

The war at sea went on for many more months, as far-flung warships did not receive word for a long interval.

Crossed communications due to slow travel bedeviled that era; national leaders, diplomats, and military commanders of that era acknowledged the inherent problem and coped as they could. It is brainlessly anachronistic and condescending for moderns to sneer at them. Unseemly, also.

When I was stationed in Turkey, we invited the workers at the British consulate to our 4th of July base party. We played softball, rugby, and volleyball and had a great time. The US embassy couldn’t be bothered to rub shoulders with disgusting soldiers.
