Cause of New Mexico nuclear waste accident remains a mystery

"A 55-gallon drum of nuclear waste, buried in a salt shaft 2,150 feet under the New Mexico desert, violently erupted late on Feb. 14 and spewed mounds of radioactive white foam.

The flowing mass, looking like whipped cream but laced with plutonium, went airborne, traveled up a ventilation duct to the surface and delivered low-level radiation doses to 21 workers.

… The investigators are looking at a variety of materials that may have been added to the drum, including lead, tungsten, acid and even kitty litter as possible factors in the explosion."

I feel safer knowing our government is trying so hard to protect us. They still don't understand what happened. My wife liked the part about kitty litter being a possible cause.

When you are trying to render a highly toxic material safe by burying it deep underground, maybe it doesn’t make sense to have a ventilation shaft that leads from the location of the material to the surface.

Did the foam spray up 2150 feet into the air?

Or did radioactive particles drift upwards of 2150 feet via the ventilation system?

I think I heard something else (in passing) about this on the radio, apparently if the kitty litter was organic, it could cause such problems (as opposed to inorganic).

Probably the result of some dogooder wanting the “organic” label because it’s more natural...
