Funnyman-turned-senator Al Franken is running a dead serious campaign for re-election, as some observers see him potentially vulnerable due to President Obama's low approval ratings in Minnesota and a vigorous GOP opponent with eyes on a sleeper upset.
Just how vulnerable is up for debate, and the race nevertheless is seen as favoring the Democrats.
But both sides now acknowledge that, with less than two months to go until Election Day, Minnesota's Senate contest between Franken and Mike McFadden, a longtime Minnesota businessman, is shaping up as a battle.
"We've always known this was going to be a tough race and it's clear we've got one," Franken spokesman Ryan Furlong told FoxNews.com, adding that the campaign is building "a strong and aggressive grassroots organization across the state."
McFadden's spokesman claimed the race has changed "dramatically."
"We see that [Franken] is clearly afraid. This race is much closer than people realize," spokesman Tom Erickson said.
Franken still leads by a comfortable -- though not too comfortable -- margin in most recent polls.

Not entirely a narcissist, but well on his way to becoming one.
Self-delusion is the most painful thing in the world to let go.
Minnesota has always been a weird and unpredictable state. They had Paul Wellstone and Rudy Boschwicz as senators at the same time. They elected Jesse Ventura. They had voted for republican majorities in the legislature and then voted them right back out again.
It’s possible that Minnesota’s fickle electorate could swing right back and throw Franken out.
His schtick has been emphasizing constituent services and dodging the issues. It’s not a bad strategy.
Franken’s loonies are trying to create a little excitement for fund raising. He has it in the bag, so don’t bother voting for him, or giving him money. He has plenty of both.
What worse, is the types of comments he was making when they elected him. Good grief were those folks dumber than a fence post...

Also, this McFadden guy isn’t making much of an effort. He should be linking Obama & Franken at every chance he gets.
The voter fraud a few years ago was completely run by Dems. They did anything they wanted and no one in that idiotic state did anything about it. Federal Dems are never questioned about anything.
Oblamo is unpopular, I didn’t realize Franken was popular.
9 point lead? Yea, unless something drastic would change, I would not be holding my breath on that one being a contest.
