They can’t discuss personal information ABOUT individual patients, but they CAN discuss number of people being treated and general locations.

I think the key, here, is in the “contract his company has with the State Dept” and the “State Dept preventing him from revealing the figure”.

This is not news.

For example, the medical missionary organizations for whom Dr. Brantly and Nancy Writebol worked evacuated personnel as the epidemic grew. Writebol’s husband was among them.

They were flown back, but did not re-enter the population immediately. This group lived in voluntary quarantine in some isolated compound until it was obvious no infection was present. They lived in proximity to each other, but with no physical contact.

Makes perfect sense.

Private and cooperative evacuations are not a concern. A hot case on an airliner is — like the infected American/Liberian who tried his best to get back here but, thankfully, didn’t.

We need the tail number from that Gulfstream modified jet. If we get it, we can track their flights to and from where, and when. The only thing not public record is who? It’s even public record of the number of people on board.

No you can't discuss any information that has a high likelihood of identifying an individual patient. That means you can't mention age above (85 YO) lets say since so few people are that age it becomes an identifying characteristic. In this case the relatively few number of cases. The relatively few number of people that were in Ebola parts of Africa and then flown here, the fact that they were sent to various parts of the country. It wouldn't take a super sleuth to put names on these people.

That said HIPPA is a horrible law and should be repealed. It is only there to protect politicians, celebrities and PC groups dependent on health care. From a public health standpoint it's a nightmare.

A CDC employee was exposed to Ebola and was flown home by charter flight. That would account for one of the unidentified flights. Phoenix Air has contracts with CDC and DOD too.

If a private group or government is going to the expense and trouble to hire Phoenix Air to fly people home, those people are probably not walking around the general population. I agree with Jedediah, we need to worry about people on airliners, not Phoenix Air charters.
