Global markets are suddenly jittery about the prospect that Scotland, after 307 years as part of the United Kingdom, could become its own country if Scots vote for independence in a Sept. 18 referendum. If proud but tiny Scotland can do it — which polls suggest is a distinct possibility — then America’s 28th state, Texas, will certainly take notice.
If any state is fed up with the rest of America, it’s Texas. Republican Gov. Rick Perry floated the idea of seceding from the United States in 2009, though he later backpedaled. A petition for Texas to “withdraw" from the United States, lodged on the White House’s “We the People” Web page, gathered 125,000 signatures before voting closed in 2013. A group called the Texas Nationalist Movement has nearly 190,000 likes on Facebook.

I was told by a person in Maine that they have a vote on the ballot in 2015 to succeed. Don’t know if it’s true or not because it’s Maine and I really don’t care if they stay or go, but if they lead then maybe others will follow.
One state can’t go it alone, it would have to be a group and be neighbors.
Most all seniors vote.
So there’s nearly 3 mil who won’t want to give up their Medicare.

I’d like to see it put to a vote, but you are correct. I don’t think a workable majority is possible. Everything is to intertwined with the beast that is our government.

It’s a serious issue. You can get your Soc Sec when you live outside the US, but not Medicare. So health insurance for old people will be a huge deal.

Yes,but that was before Spindle Top (circa 1901). Oil, black gold, Texas tea changed the economic future of Texas and is still changing it.
Even with oil and revenues, the Texas economy is much more diversified now. Only Californica and New Yawk state may be larger and they are in decline. The Texas economy is growing.
Texas, this time, will not secede from the Union. At some point, the other red states may join with Texas in booting the blue states out of the Union. Texans believe in the Constitution and Union our founding fathers gave us and want to keep it. Remember, the Union started with 13 colonies and grew into a nation.
Abraham Lincoln did not whip Texas or any confederate states back into line. He simply let Sherman loose to needlessly destroy all life and property in his march through Georgia. Sherman intentionally burned or destroyed every building (especially the courthouses where deeds and records were kept), railroads and rolling stock, homesteads and farm fields, and killed all the horses and livestock in his march to the sea. He did not distinguish between military or civilian targets. Southerners bitterly remember the events down to this very day.
Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox to end the war and the killing (630,000 dead after 4 years). Lincoln as far as I know did not even attend the surrender. Robert E. Lee did the honourable thing and was a greater man than Lincoln in my opinion. Lincoln only freed the slaves after the conflict started and the Union was beginning to fail. The conflict was not over the issue of slavery, but economics. Texas understands economics much better this time around and will not make the same mistakes.

I haven't had time to find out enough about it, but would really be surprised if the vote involved unilaterally declaring Scottish independence as soon as a majority voted "yes."
So, sure, anybody could begin a process that might eventually result in one part of a country becoming an independent country with the consent of the existing government. That would be different from what was attempted in 1861.

To secede means to peacefully withdraw. To rebel is armed revolution. That's why we learn about the American Revolution and not the American Secession.

Incidentally, there have always been Hispanics in Texas, so how did Texas become conservative?
Hispanic boys and girls born in Texas are American and raised as Texans. They weren’t born speaking Spanish. And to be bi-lingual in Texas is not uncommon. Besides Hispanics are very family oriented as are Texans. The fathers are not absent. The mothers very devoted and loving. The children of these families are impeccably dressed and well mannered.
Finally, its the spirit of Texans and our history. Not just one culture, but the Texas blend. Mexico has been trying to invade us forever and we know they will keep coming. Some are bad people but most are good. Once here, the good ones add value to our culture. The bad ones we hope go to Californica.
I know that Madison said that a proper secession required the consent of the other states but I'm not aware where he said it required unanimous consent.
What part of the Constitution gives some states to power to boot out other states?
