What We’re Afraid to Say About Ebola
NYT ^ | 9/11/14 | MICHAEL T. OSTERHOLM

The second possibility is one that virologists are loath to discuss openly but are definitely considering in private: that an Ebola virus could mutate to become transmissible through the air. You can now get Ebola only through direct contact with bodily fluids. But viruses like Ebola are notoriously sloppy in replicating, meaning the virus entering one person may be genetically different from the virus entering the next. The current Ebola virus’s hyper-evolution is unprecedented; there has been more human-to-human transmission in the past four months than most likely occurred in the last 500 to 1,000 years. Each new infection represents trillions of throws of the genetic dice.

Society is screwed unless they quickly cut off air traffic in and out of Africa. I’d put a 30-day no-flight deal into effect.

We heard the same scare stories about AIDS in Africa 20 years ago...

That's the part the NYT is afraid to talk about. It's not fair to confine Ebola to 3rd world African countries. We need to spread the wealth to America and Europe.

So you are comparing AIDS to Ebola? In what ways are they the same?

There were predictions it would wipe out 50% of Africa with huge areas depopulated. Never happened.

Yes, but are they working to prevent it or to cause it to spread more quickly?

Don't forget, if more people died then the wild-eyed greenies will be pleased that there are more resources for the elite eco-nuts.

It’s already airborne. How else do you suppose that those American health-care workers were infected? They took all the proper precautions. Yet, they were still infected. There can be only one explanation.

I’m not afraid to say this.

OBAMA IS BEHIND IT!

What, you thought only Muslims in the Middle East like biological warfare? No, our very own Muzzie in chief and black nationalist is determined to infect Christian whites with diseases from illegals because he believes in the equal distribution of sickness. White people must be punished for what they did to his terrorist granddaddy.

The diseased children sent here from Marxist hellholes in Central America are the viral shock troops of Obama’s rage. The man is a MEGA RACIST!

Never fear. Ebola patients could be treated on hospital ships without risking the entire US population, but king Hussein 0bama's regime has turned on the pipeline to bring infected "patients" into the country, so we can share the wealth of third world countries.

And take note - they say it cannot be transmitted through the air, but when they arrive , medical personnel use "double bagging" techniques - one spacesuit for the ebola patient and one for the person accompanying them.

The government wouldn't lie to you. /sarc

http://news.discovery.com/human/health/ebola-can-attack-from-hasmat-suit-surfaces-140909.htm

“The physical exhaustion and emotional fatigue that come with caring for patients infected with Ebola may further increase the chance of an inadvertent exposure to bodily fluids on the outside of the personal protective equipment, leading to unwanted contact when the gear is removed,”

Global situation and trends: Since the beginning of the epidemic, almost 75 million people have been infected with the HIV virus and about 36 million people have died of HIV. Globally, 35.3 million [32.2–38.8 million] people were living with HIV at the end of 2012. An estimated 0.8% of adults aged 15–49 years worldwide are living with HIV, although the burden of the epidemic continues to vary considerably between countries and regions. Sub-Saharan Africa remains most severely affected, with nearly 1 in every 20 adults living with HIV and accounting for 71% of the people living with HIV worldwide.

So in you are saying that it is impossible for any disease to become a pandemic?

It has been widely reported to be airborne. The only disagreement is at what range an infected patient can transmit the disease.

Elevator, airplane, train, all in range. Shopping mall, grocery store or classroom,....not sure yet.

No. But how many times do you get to cry wolf before no one pays attention anymore...
