The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) shot down a Syrian regime fighter jet conducting airstrikes on the groups stronghold of Raqqa on Tuesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.
The Britain-based monitor said: It is the first aircraft shot down since the regime launched air strikes against the jihadists in July following their declaration of a caliphate in late June.
Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP that the plane was carrying out strikes on the ISIS stronghold of Raqa when it was hit.
It crashed into a house in the Euphrates Valley city, the sole provincial capital entirely out of Syrian government control, causing deaths and injuries on the ground, he added.
A photograph posted on a jihadist Twitter account purported to show the burnt-out wreckage of the plane.
"Allahu Akbar (God is greater), thanks to God we can confirm that a military aircraft has been shot down over Raqa," another account said, congratulating the "lions of the Islamic State."

This has huge implications for aviation in the region. If you sign onto the coalition, you probably don’t get to keep your flight routes.
Aviation very well may be paying IS the jiz tax just to keep flying in the region.
Still haven’t seen this on FNC and I’ve been watching all morning.
I agree — shootdiwn altitude might tell us some important clues, also if flares, chaff, dazzling and spoof attempts were made.
If the pilot also tried the last two I’d say that’s OUR gear for sure.
If instead it looks like a lucky hit close to the deck i’d say it could be one of the POS SA-7’s from Khadaffi’s once-sprawling arsenal (Reagan’s Lessons On Manners also included bombing Benghazi, though the notion Khaddafi’s daughter was killed turned out much later to have been a lie).
This has Benghazi written all over it.
No fire, but a billowing plume of smoke?
Sure.
Good ping.
Watergate on steroids is what her staff did.
That’s why I believe that there are plenty of troops on the ground.
Too much exposure without support.
It’s rumored someone in Benghazi caught zero and thighness in the Situation room together.. Jarrett made it look like zero had no knowledge - the CINC having no knowledge of his Ambassador’s attack and murder! - by flying him out to Vegas while Benghazi was underway.
Someone mentioned thighness’ husband looked very grim in Iowa today.. maybe he just got wind of the shootdown.
Meanwhile on FNC, the big story is still athletes abusing their wives and children.
And two more years of Commandante Barry.
A lot can happen in two years.
ok
Yup!
“Has this News report been sent to Obama?”
Not yet, they don’t want to interrupt today’s golf game.
I doubt God’s on the side of the Devil. Both the shooter and the pilot were shouting, “Allahu Akbar”.
“Ive always wondered which side God is on when there are battles fought between people of the same faith.”
My bet is He’s on neither side here! Satan, pick up the Red Phone!
God created his people, the Jews, and has sat back and mostly watched the theater, sometimes intervening for their sake. God is not interested in the Christians nor the Muslims or any of the other derivatives of mankind inhabiting the planet. God’s here to observe and to allow each one of us to decide whether we believe and praise him or not as it should be done. It is he who sits in final judgment and a prophet of any religion, and no prophet can be one and the same with God for there was never a mandate that the one the Jews await will also be their God on the earth or the patch he created called Eden.
You know this as a fact?
“It crashed into a house in the Euphrates Valley city, the sole provincial capital entirely out of Syrian government control, causing deaths and injuries on the ground”
I wonder if the pilot chose to ride it down, rather than eject and be captured, and then tortured and beheaded?
(The pilot was likely an Alawite, since Syria tended to keep
its air power in the hands of trusted groups.)
Don’t know
Irony.
The Yahoo article upthread shows IS guys showing off fuselage parts, but no pilot parts.. so he hopefully ejected and got away.
They’d use parts of the pilot in their recruiting materials if they had them.
I’m still waiting for Obama to tell the American people how this group of people got all of these weapons, where the money came from, and where the training came from.
“Obama better get serious or they only get stronger.”
The bigger question is what his goal is.
Also, lost in all of this is any discussion of at what point the Iranian nuclear program is. A nuclear Iran is a significant game changer. Khrushchev was at least normal enough to reject Castro’s calls to launch preemptively on the U.S. Those we are dealing with in the Middle East include those who would likely not hesitate - if capable.
