Anti-Semitic socialist, at that.
whats a “First Minister” ???
is that like a Prime Minister ???
or is that different ???
BO made major changes in our country with a mere 52% mandate.
Good riddance to that socialist.
Amen to that.
Definitely an odd setup where England has less autonomy from the Scots than the Scots have from England.
After all that has happened since 9/11/2001, Cameron still has the naïveté to shout that brainless slogan: “Islam is a religion of peace”.
We have no leaders in the West.
The defeated demagogue slinks away......
Agreed.
I agree....
So, the people of Scotland would much rather be surfs
and subjects instead of sovereign individual citizens?
Figures, the natural yearning for freedom and independence
along with rugged individualism was bread of of Europeans
years ago. Now they are just weak and unridable little
toadies. What a waste.
“So, the people of Scotland would much rather be surfs
and subjects instead of sovereign individual citizens?”
Uh, they never were either. Where do people keep getting these insane ideas that Scotland is some occupied province of England?
That was the problem with the pro-independence. They are way to overly dramatic and leaned to heavily on emotionalism. As if they were royal soldiers marching through the streets ordering people to kiss photos of the Queen.
Scotland IS a sovereign nation. Has been since 843. Scotland never has been and is not a part of England.
Great Britain or The United Kingdom are NOT different words for England. They are a union of Scotland, England, Wales and NI.
We did not choose to ‘stay part of England’ or any such last night, we chose to remain a sovereign Scottish nation within the UK state. The UK/GB is a state made up of the four nations.
Scotland JOINED the UK in 1707 as a free and independent nation, and that’s what we remain, as do England, Wales and NI. We are all sovereign nations free to stay or leave the UK state.
If people don’t understand the basics of the UK and its parts, you wont understand what happened last night. Irrespective of result.
p.s the British have been citizens since the Nationality Act of 1948. Mistake to think having a monarchy means we are subjects.
I don’t think Northern Ireland counts as a “nation”
Today, ‘Falling on One’s Sword’ has a completely different meaning.
Used to be Falling on One’s Sword meant that you had shamed many people - including yourself, made a mess of things or even got caught with your hand in the cookie jar.
SO. you place your sword in front of you and fall. FINIS.
Today some clown like the fools we have (supposedly) representing us, admit to any of the above and say “I take responsibility” and go back to the same job....Wrong Answer.
A defeated Japanese General didn’t worry about Courts Martial or getting ‘fired’, he just pulled out the old trusty wakasashi and ‘hari carried’ his way out of his problems.
Even today some of the Chinese do that (well it is reported they commit suicide when it is found they were mixing anti freeze in the food)...
Techinically neither does Wales, NI is a province, but for the sake of shorthand, I say countries, so as not to confuse people here. I know the UK makeup can be very confusing for non-Brits.
Exactly. FReepers need to read who he was, and who the Scottish National Party was/is. The coalition against independence was formed from the Conservative party, the Scottish Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats (interesting alliance) all of whom for various reasons in opposition to the SNP.
The SNP was for retaining monarchical relations/titles with the UK while being “independent” and was for unilateral nuclear disarmament (ie. elimination of all the missile sites the UK has in Scotland including the Trident UK/US base in Faslane, Firth on Clyde) thereby rendering the UK essentially disarmed as regards any invasion or excursions by the newly stalinized Russians under Putin. The SNP ie. was/is a member of the UK parliament and is further left of the Labour party. So this was a combined NO effort.
Also of interest is that the EU would not entertain entrance of a new Scotland into the EU. And huge issues on banking independence that ALL Scots were aware of, and therefore against— moving the Royal Bank of Scotland to London, for instance as well as Lloyds Bank— out of Edingburgh?!!
Independence isn’t over- just not the bs put out by the left of center SNP. Now remains to be seen what action will be demanded of Cameron (yeah, right).
Well, Salmond shows he has some personal honor. God bless him in his retirement, though we are political opposites.
The real problem came when Salmond didn’t have any structure in place that would ensure a smooth transition to an independent economy, military, and alliances for Scotland. As for joining the EU, I am certain that the EU won’t be accepting new members for the next three or so years. So that isn’t the point.
Without any kind of real structure to ensure Scotland’s defense and own economic alliances, I am certain that it only makes sense that they would play it safe. In regards to a new referendum, many nations will be holding one after the death of the Queen; it’s common knowledge that Australia is interested in holding one to separate from the Crown and so is New Zealand. There are other countries as well.
I had a chat with a Scotsman and he told me was sure it would be “No,” mainly since at the moment Scotland has nothing in regards to her own defense.
Amen to that.
