A homeowner sporting a Game of Thrones T-Shirt and brandished with a medieval sword says that he could have taken the life of an intruder who entered his home but that he is a Christian and doesn't believe in killing.

Thomas McGowan, 25, broke into the Wichita Falls, Texas home of Jimmy Morgan Jr. at midnight on Tuesday but retreated with terror leaving splatters of blood on the wall after Morgan Jr. whipped out a medieval sword and told him to get lost.

McGowan broke into Morgan Jr.'s home to hide from police after crashing his car during a police chase.

[...]

Morgan Jr. had the intruder cornered the other night and easily could have killed him but he says he is a religious and moral man who doesn't believe in taking someone's life.

'I am a Christian man and I don't want to take life, however I want to make sure that he understands that his life was mine to take. I let him have it.'

In the close confines of a room or hallway of a house I’m thinking that a longsword would be one of the more frightening things to confront. Sure a gun is scary too, and he’s lucky this intruder wasn’t (apparently) armed, but still. In a small darkened space that sight of a long glint of sharp steel reaches deep into a very primal place in the human psyche. Instant fear.

LOL, the vast majority of people have no idea of how to fight with a sword. “Pointy end goes into the other man”. If they have watched TV or movies, they fight like Conan.

I haven’t seen any of Game of Thrones. I hear it’s good. I tried reading the book but found it incomprehensible. Maybe I’ll try again sometime.

I’m not into SCA like this guy, but I have trained with ARMA. And I have swords everywhere. :-)

There are a surprisingly large number of swordsman around today, far more than there were in the 1980s. In Phoenix, for example, the Society for Creative Anachronisms holds a regular Melee blunt sword fighting every week in season, that turns out hundreds of swordsmen.

And it’s not uncommon to see people walking or riding around in the evening with a sheathed sword tied to their backpack.

Granted there are concealed carry guns all over the place as well. Fewer open carry unless it’s hot out.

Never bring a sword to a gun fight.....but sometimes they will do in a pinch.

I once cornered a home intruder with a Bowie knife. Luckily he wasn’t armed, and I let him go because it was just some kid, probably around 17 or 18. Idiot. I also didn’t want blood all over my floor, or want to explain to the police why there’s a dead body in my living room.

A little hint to the perp, you usually either get out of the way of the punch or do a high block to counter it. Normally it is ill-advised to block it with your eye. It appears you might not be familiar with this advise.

Longsword would be awkward inside, especially in a small room or hallway.

Might not be as scary, but I suspect a kukri or similar weapon would be more effective.

Inside the home, a sword has a few advantages over a gun. You can keep a few laying around, even though you have kids, because kids understand “Sharp! Don’t touch!”. And within a few yards, you can draw and run a guy through with a sword just as fast as you can draw and fire a gun.

>>Longsword would be awkward inside, especially in a small room or hallway.<<

Depends on how you use it. You can thrust with the point of a longsword. You can also swing it like a baseball bat, rather than the wide overhead swings you see in the movies. Watch the video from Cold Steel below.

The Roman legions favored the short sword because they often fought in tight formations where you couldn’t just swing it around. Of course, I’m still saying a revolver is the best weapon for home defense, not a gladius.

Agreed. I'm sure the guy in the article would have preferred a firearm, but a sword is what he had at hand.

One additional advantage of a sword that I forgot to mention in my prior post: you can use it against a guy without having to be too careful about what's behind him. In a hallway where your kid's bedroom is behind the perp, you have to be careful with your gun.

” he is a Christian and doesn’t believe in killing.”

Those are two distinctly different beliefs.
