That’s exactly why his writing is fantastic. Brevity.

This will be a Christian nation when Christianity is mandated by law. Until then, we are a nation that happens to contain Christians.

Hemingway is probably so highly regarded by the American people because he had a willing media to build up his reputation.

Didn’t Ed Sullivan gush over Castro on his CBS Sunday evening fantasy?

I think the extent of Fitzgerald’s smile may depend on where he himself ends up in the pantheon.

I haven’t read “A Moveable Feast” since the Hotchner edition came out in 1964. I liked it a lot but would like to read it again. All I can find in Kindle form is the revised edition by Hemingway’s son, which sounds a little self-serving to me. I’ll keep looking for the original but Amazon doesn’t appear to offer it. I may be stuck with paper.

A lot of people are coming to the conclusion that The Great Gatsby might be the greatest American novel. Not bad. And his short stories - magnificent.

That is an interesting theory. It certainly seems plausible. Otoh, one thing I have noticed is that there are plenty of people who genuinely like Hemingway. His true fans are nothing if not exceedingly enthusiastic.

Me, I just don’t see it. Hemingway comes across as a writer who missed the point of writing. But then I have loved Faulkner from the day I read the first sentence in the first story of his that I ever got my hands on. [The Bear] Now there was a writer. I daresay you won’t find too many avid Faulkner fans w a high opinion of Hemingway, & vice versa.

On a side note, I don’t know why Faulkner doesn’t get more credit for humor. ‘Was’ is one of the funniest stories I have ever read.

This country was founded upon a firm foundation of scripture and the Biblical worldview of the Founding Fathers. Our problems occur when we let ourselves forget that.

Best literary comeback ever.

It wasn’t a very sharp comeback at all. Faulkner wasn’t talking about using big words to elicit emotions. Hemingway either missed his point, or couldn’t speak to it so resorted to snark instead.

And apparently you missed the point of the comeback.

It was a thin-skinned, defensive, petty and pathetic comeback. It didn’t reflect well on Hemingway at all.
