~ Hall of Heroes ~ Dirk John Vlug Info from here. |
|
Dirk John Vlug (August 20, 1916 June 25, 1996) was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the United States military's highest decorationthe Medal of Honorfor his actions in World War II. Vlug joined the Army from Grand Rapids, Michigan in April 1941, and by December 15, 1944 was serving as a private first class in the 126th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division. On that day, near Limon in the Philippine province of Leyte, Vlug single-handedly destroyed five enemy tanks. For his actions, he was issued the Medal of Honor a year and a half later, on June 26, 1946. He subsequently left the army and joined the Michigan National Guard in May 1949, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant in January 1951. Vlug died at age 79 and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Private First Class Vlug's official Medal of Honor citation reads: He displayed conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty when an American roadblock on the Ormoc Road was attacked by a group of enemy tanks. He left his covered position, and with a rocket launcher and 6 rounds of ammunition, advanced alone under intense machine gun and 37-mm. fire. Loading single-handedly, he destroyed the first tank, killing its occupants with a single round. As the crew of the second tank started to dismount and attack him, he killed 1 of the foe with his pistol, forcing the survivors to return to their vehicle, which he then destroyed with a second round. Three more hostile tanks moved up the road, so he flanked the first and eliminated it, and then, despite a hail of enemy fire, pressed forward again to destroy another. With his last round of ammunition he struck the remaining vehicle, causing it to crash down a steep embankment. Through his sustained heroism in the face of superior forces, Pfc. Vlug alone destroyed 5 enemy tanks and greatly facilitated successful accomplishment of his battalion's mission. |
Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families. This is a politics-free zone! Thanks for helping us in our mission! |

Amazing Grace
Sept 29, 2014
Read: Ephesians 2:1-10
Pressed into service in the Royal Navy, John Newton was dismissed for insubordination and turned to a career trafficking in slaves. Notorious for cursing and blasphemy, Newton served on a slave ship during the cruelest days of trans-Atlantic slavery, finally working his way up to captain.
A dramatic conversion on the high seas set him on the path to grace. He always felt a sense of undeservedness for his new life. He became a rousing evangelical preacher and eventually a leader in the abolitionist movement. Newton appeared before Parliament, giving irrefutable eyewitness testimony to the horror and immorality of the slave trade. We also know him as the author of the lyrics of perhaps the best-loved hymn of all time, Amazing Grace.
Newton described any good in himself as an outworking of Gods grace. In doing so, he stands with these great heroesa murderer and adulterer (King David), a coward (the apostle Peter), and a persecutor of Christians (the apostle Paul).
This same grace is available to all who call upon God, for in Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace (Eph. 1:7).
Amazing gracehow sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind but now I see. Newton
Lives rooted in Gods unchanging grace can never be uprooted.
Here in Ephesians 2, Paul contrasts a persons life before being saved by the grace of God to life after salvation by grace through faith. The first contrast is in verse 1: We were once dead in trespasses but have been made alive. Another contrast is in our behavior. We once walked according to the course of this world (v.2). Now, as believers, we walk according to good works prepared by God (v.10).

Good morning, Ms Feather...*hugs*
Busy day for sure...Mom got 2 trips downstairs to work on her “just brought in” geraniums. She’s cut them back and says they are ready for the winter. I finally found the instructions on how to set the lights for them and think they are ready to face the winter on the ledge by the windows downstairs. We had some walking issues last evening and decided she maybe pressed her luck. I just this minute finished hooking up her MedicalAlert system. The call in/activation will have to wait til I get home from work.
A young squirrel has just figured out how to get to the little tray that has sunflower seeds in it outside my Mom’s window. He makes trip after trip after trip coming for peanuts. She is going to have to be VERY careful that he doesn’t get in the window as she puts peanuts out for him.
So glad you had nice weather and could sit out and enjoy the local “wildlife”.
