They Lost Their Bakery, Now Face Bankruptcy
The Daily Signal ^ | September 29, 2014 | Kelsey Harkness

A bakery owner in Oregon broke down in tears while discussing the fallout of her and her husband’s decision not to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple on the basis of their Christian beliefs.

Earlier this year, the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries found “substantial evidence” that Aaron and Melissa Klein, owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, discriminated against the lesbian couple.

Oregon bakery owners face a $150,000 discrimination fine for not baking a wedding cake for lesbians.

They now face a fine in excess of $150,000.

(snip)

The ordeal started in February 2013, when Rachel Cryer and Laurel Bowman asked the bakery owners to design a wedding cake for their same-sex commitment ceremony.

At the time, Oregon defined marriage as the union between one man and one woman; voters overwhelmingly approved the constitutional amendment in 2004.

Aaron told The Daily Signal he thought he was “well within” his legal rights to decline the service, citing his traditional beliefs that a marriage is between a man and a woman.

In January 2014, the Kleins were charged with violating Oregon’s Equality Act of 2007, a law that protects the rights of the LGBT community.

I’d just make them the crappiest cake ever.

That's an interesting take! I like your thinking there. But mainly, I think sometimes the bakeries and the florists and so on over analyze their part in a wedding. They're just providing commodities. They're not singing in the ceremony, not performing the ceremony - they have nothing to do with the ceremony other than being a provider of a trapping of it. They are not making any statement of supporting the activity any more than the maker of the pressure cooker used in the Boston bombing was advocating what the terrorist brothers were up to. I think they take themselves too seriously.

And they're being played for suckers. If they had agreed to bake it, I bet the couple would've gone and continued to find a bakery that would deny them.

The crowds in the streets protesting this don't seem to be as large as the crowds supporting the denial of rights to those who don't bow down to queers. For that reason, the current crowd running this country don't care whether this stands up in court over time or who it bankrupts because the way they judge whether or not they have any opposition; by how many people are in the streets and willing to stay at it.

That's how they overthrow governments, with mobs, so that's the only sort of overthrow they fear, not anything trivial like the law and losing in court.

By the time something works it's way through court they've already won no matter what the court decision is because they already forced everyone to go along for fear of the consequences. IOW, they've already made their way the only socially acceptable way and it has become self enforcing due to government schools using an example like this to teach that such refusals of service are illegal and unacceptable.

No court decision down the road will overturn the popular conception at that point.

There should be a major counter suit against those who would ruin businesses in the interest of promoting aberrant behavior.

This is surely a cause to crowdfund. Conservative, biblical churches (yes, there are some left, but none in WCC) should also support them.

How do you propose they do that when the full weight of the government is crushing them.

Good grief...they could simply MOVE across the river and be outside the juristiction of Oregon's gaystapo.

All of this is an extremely slippery slope. What if an Islamist walked into this bakery and wanted a cake baked and decorated to look like the Kaaba in Mecca, and inscribed with the words “Islam will rule the world”? Would the bakery be required to bake that? Where is the line drawn?

For that matter, what if someone walks into a bakery owned by liberals and wants to order a cake that is decorated as an American flag, has statuettes of Reagan, Bush, Cheney, and Palin on it, and has an inscription that says “Leaders with Moral Principles”? If they refused, would they be put under the same scrutiny?

Seems to me they should have the right to refuse for whatever reason they feel like refusing. Of course the civil law hasn’t been like that for 40+ years for certain categories of people.

“They’re not singing in the ceremony, not performing the ceremony - they have nothing to do with the ceremony other than being a provider of a trapping of it.”

They disagree. Just like a Catholic baker might refuse to cater a black mass, even though he was only asked to bake cookies for the Satanists to snack on.

“I’d just make them the crappiest cake ever.”

There are several ways to dissuade gay wedding cake customers.
1. Tell them that you will be donating their fee to an anti gay wedding organization.
2. Imply that the cake MAY contain “extra ingredients” such as when you send back food at a restaurant.

Democrats have a beautiful dream for Christians: cattle cars, barbed wire, and forced labor. All they need is amnesty and a permanent majority.

Move - tell the “authority” issuing the fine to go pee up a rope.

Standard operating procedure from the homofacists. I am absolutely certain there are homosexual owned bakeries there. But these two perverts specifically went to a bakery they had reason to believe would turn them down. Its all part of the destruction of society needed to legitimatize their perversions.
They claim hatred every time someone disagrees with them but the reality is they hate everyone else that does not agree with them......

How is a credit card reader company refusing service to gun owners different?

Unless coerced into doing so by a government entity, it is WAAAAAY different. No private entity has the ability to legally use lethal force or the threat thereof to impose its will on any person.

Now, I HIGHLY suspect that the card reader company is being strongarmed by “Operation Chokepoint”. They did it to the customers of the company that I worked for, putting it out of business, and costing me 30% of my income.

The goal of militant homosexuals is the complete destruction of all opposition to their chosen lifestyle. If it is painful or destructive to those standing on their personal beliefs, too bad.

Businesses have done things to endanger life and limb, and have not paid a fine 1/10 that amount.

The absolute white hot seething hatred for Christians is palpable.

Don’t get the cart & horse mixed up.
The left doesn’t REALLY care about homos’ rights any more than they do any individual’s rights.

They care about crushing Christianity.

And the homos are just the most convenient weapon in our time.

You would NOT be safe making a bad cake. If the pervs could demonstrate that the product you made for them was observably inferior to that made for anyone else, they could establish malicious intent and present the sloppy cake as evidence of your discrimination. Either you make the cake and do it right or you don’t make the cake at all.

A better solution would be to have an “accident” on the way to the satanic mass where the queers are being united. The cake fell on the floor or your delivery van had a carbon monoxide leak or you found out that the flour had rat poison in it. Or better yet, you got “sick” the day the cake was supposed to be baked and you just couldn’t get to it.

Or you could just be honest and tell them that you don’t do business with perverts because it violates the free exercise of your religion.

They do have the right. I made that clear in my very first words on the subject.

I also have to right to say they really shouldn’t have exercised that right in this case. It wasn’t worth it. We all have rights - but it’s absurd to think we can, or should, ASSERT EVERY RIGHT AT EVERY SECOND.

If they lose their business, what about the rights of their creditors and employees and landlords??????

I agree with you on the bad cake risk....I was just complimenting the other poster on his idea.....a thought experiment.

Maybe it’s just me, but if I’m a baker or own or manage a bakery, my job is to sell as many cakes as I can. Without that, I cannot pay my staff, my rent, put money in the offering plate, etc.
