Vatican document challenges Church to change attitude to gays

In a dramatic shift in tone, a Vatican document said on Monday that homosexuals had "gifts and qualities to offer" and asked if Catholicism could accept gays and recognize positive aspects of same-sex couples.

Roman Catholic gay rights groups around the world hailed the paper as a breakthrough, but Church conservatives called it a betrayal of traditional family values.

The document, prepared after a week of discussions at an assembly of 200 bishops on the family, said the Church should challenge itself to find "a fraternal space" for homosexuals without compromising Catholic doctrine on family and matrimony.

While the text did not signal any change in the Church's condemnation of homosexual acts or gay marriage, it used less judgmental and more compassionate language than that seen in Vatican statements prior to the 2013 election of Pope Francis.

"Homosexuals have gifts and qualities to offer the Christian community: are we capable of welcoming these people, guaranteeing to them a further space in our communities? Often they wish to encounter a Church that offers them a welcoming home," said the document, known by its Latin name "relatio".

Only if they get God to change his mind about sin.

No, we will not “accept” them demanding the Church accept their continuing to sin.

Amen.

Romans 1:26-27

"For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error."

In my opinion the Gay Priests and Cardinals and Bishops are trying to completely ruin the church and cement their power base....

That is what the synod is all about...

I wonder if this is related to the number of homosexual clergy members? Besides those that cost the Church millions in homosexual rape cases, there are plenty more out there.

Benedict XVI banned them from the seminaries (I was shocked that wasn’t already in place for centuries); will this undo the ban?

Of course a vicar of Christ’s main responsibility is to be among the sinners. So “shunning” homosexuals is a violation of that duty. But when they’re among sinners they must calmly, clearly and forcefully explaining to them that their acts are sinful and greatly displease their Creator.OTOH,”celebrating” a sinners acts is beyond ridiculous.

Celebrate sexual deviancy, right Pope? We’ll all have a “gay” old time.

This is a difficult issue. Homosexuality is both wrong, and more importantly it is a sin. I do think we can have compassion toward practicing homosexuality without condoning their action. If we cannot, then we need to spurn those who are currently living together, or who live together and have children, along with a myriad of other sins.

So if this is all the Catholic church is saying, I think this is fine, although many people are rightly suspicious of this pope right now. Let's see if there is more to this, or if there are any other “translations” we haven't yet seen.

The great falling away (apostasia) is taking place before our eyes.

With the falling of the RCC, there are no major Christian denominations remaining that oppose the sodomite agenda.

Good one.

I hope this isn’t a case of desperation because the RC church has a shortage of priests. Is this the first step towards accepting homosexuals as priests?

I feel for my conservative RC friends who will be shocked and dismayed by this.

Q: What will Catholics do when the Magisterium tells them that homosexuality is no longer sin?

A: The same thing they always do - accept their church tradition over God's Word.

All 57 states can approve the gay lifestyle. The Catholic Church and anybody else can approve it. God still disapproves of it.
So which side would you prefer to be on.

Not major ones, but God promised He would preserve a remnant of believers.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

“2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.” They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.”

Sure. They just have to accept that the difference between "A" and "not A" is not absolute but subject to interpretation. Actually, here it's more "A" and "thou shalt not A"

Celebrate diversity: lust, greed, gluttony, envy, anger, pride, sloth

LOL you may be right, but that's not what Catholics are saying elsewhere.

They are already accepted, as sinners and must repent. They should never be allowed to marry and/or practice their choice openly. That would spell the end of the church.
