Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that “Iran is a natural ally” of the U.S.

“As long as Iran is ruled by the ayatollah and bases itself on its sectarian philosophy, we have to be careful. But basically, as a country, Iran is a natural ally of the United States. It’s the ideological, religious component that makes it an antagonist,” said Kissinger, who served as Secretary of State for the Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford administrations. …

“Pro-Western” means nothing. They have to be pro-US. Even a significant part of the so-called “West” is anti-USA because of the stance of many people here against socialism.

The Islamic Republic would not be able to stand without a significant percentage of the population being on the Mullah’s side.

“It’s the ideological, religious component that makes it an antagonist,”

That’s not going to change any time soon, Hank.

“Why isn’t Hank dead?”

The devil doesn’t want him.

ut basically, as a country, Iran is a natural ally of the United States. It’s the ideological, religious component that makes it an antagonist,” said Kissinger

Yup, aside from that "component" which makes Iran hate women, other religions, the 21st century and the US, it's our natural ally. Why, it could be right up there with Pakistan, another of our great natural allies. All we need to do is unplug that inconvenient "component" and Iran will love us back.

I'm not sure at what point in history the US State Deprtment and foreign policy establishment decided to turn their backs on reality, but it isn't working and it continues to get Americans killed.

I believe the people of Iran are much more in favor of good relations with the U. S. than the leadership is.

The people of Iran remember the relations under the Shah. The leadership isn’t going to play into that.

So Kissinger is right, but what can you do about it. Eventually the leadership will change, at least I hope it does.

If it doesn’t, there will never be good relations between us. So that makes Kissinger’s comments mute.

“As long as he USA is ruled by the liberal socialists and bases itself on its socialist Marxist philosophy, we have to be careful.

But basically, as a country, USA is the natural place for freedom to exist.

It’s the ideological, liberal socialist religious component that makes it an antagonist,” should have been said by Henry the K, who served as Secretary of State for the Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford administrations, and represented the US at Paris, arguing about the shape of the table, unlike Kerry, who actually served there, in Viet Nam,(you know). …

Iran was an ally until Jimmy Carter betrayed the Shah of Iran. An anti-communist that recognized Isreal, opposed Muslim extremists and attempted to modernize Iran. Clearly he had to go.

And his comments are designed to gin up support amongst US conservatives for "regime change" in Iran, i.e., more military new world order "games" (to them).

So Kissinger is right, but what can you do about it. Eventually the leadership will change, at least I hope it does.

If it doesn’t, there will never be good relations between us. So that makes Kissinger’s comments mute.

They’d be looking to sabotage the nuke program as much as possible if they were after better relations with the US, never mind Israel.

The only way to change the leadership in Iran is to destroy the mullahs and the IRG.

Good lord. Like Carter, this evil monster just won’t crawl away and die somewhere.

I’ve had an intense dislike of that man since Nixon’s time.

The people of Iran are actually pro-Western. The religious leadership is the “Death to America” crowd.

Actually no ... This is a common misconception. Yes, during the demonstrations it was clear that the urban Iranians were pro-democracy. But what brought the democracy demonstrations to an end? The regime produced a massive counter-demonstration from the hinterlands.

He is spot on. They may chant death to America but the animals who burnt 3000 Americans alive are our great friends with whom we share an intimate relationship: Saudi Arabia. There is nothing more Saudi Arabia would hate than a normal US-Iran relationship and it gives us a valuable card. Do everything to undermine these thugs.

I believe the majority of Iranians want regime change. I also believe Iranians are a very proud people, and they don’t take kindly to foreign intervention.

Despite what I think, I can’t tell what the average guy on the street thinks for sure, so I’m in no mood to step in and change things. That’s an internal matter.

When it comes to nukes, that’s entirely different. I think the Western nations should give Iran a time table to cease their nuclear program or we should end it for them.

Other than that, no need for boots on the ground. The same regime can stay in place.

I’m not sure some of the Iranians aren’t helping.

It seems strange to me that things keep happening. Israelis aren’t in there. I doubt it anyway.

The Mullahs need to go, but as long as the nukes are off-line, I don’t really give a rip. Well at least not enough for us to go in and change things up.

The educated half of Iran is a natural ally, unfortunately there’s a large enough segment that is religious enough to support the regime.

So you are implying that those with religious convictions are ignorant?

The scorpion is the natural ally of the frog. As is the boiling kettle. And the Blender.

That’s why Saudi Arabia’s developing nukes, right?

Iran doesn’t become the world’s leading state sponsor of Islamic terrorism without significant help of non-militants and non-clerics.

>The people of Iran are actually pro-Western

I think you mean were pro-western since I believe the majority of Persians (as they prefer to be called) emigrated to the west after the fall of the Shah.
