IMO, all of this agitprop is a sign that Obama is going to bow to the mullahs to include them in an Axis with Gulf Arabs to sink Russian budget via oil market and it is how they are prepping a public opinion.
It is not that I disagree with the factual component of this article and that Iran has a potential to become friendly with the West, but here is why they do brings it out.
Nations, like people, don’t always- or even usually- act in their best interest.
If that were true, they never would have put up with the Revolutionary Guard and/or the Mullahs and would have overthrown them already; they would have insisted on keeping the Shah to boot. You can’t repress a whole country of Neda Agha-Soltans.

The educated half of Iran is a natural ally, unfortunately there’s a large enough segment that is religious enough to support the regime.
Unlike our alliance of convenience with the Saudis, whose population pretty much universally is at odds with the West.
