Americans' fear of an Ebola outbreak is being fueled by "sanity-resistant" cable TV news coverage and some members of Congress, Jon Stewart said on Tuesday's "Daily Show."
News that a Dallas nurse became infected with Ebola after treating a Liberian man stricken with the disease has sparked fears that the virus — which has killed thousands of people in West Africa — could spread to other parts of the United States.
"Clearly the news anchors are having trouble drawing the distinction between a person contracting the disease after working in close contact with an Ebola patient," Stewart said, "and the inevitability of all of us getting it now! Run!"
Later in the segment, Stewart introduced a clip of Texas Rep. Pete Sessions urging the White House to ban all U.S.-bound flights from West Africa

Mariner, you speak the truth. All one has to do is know a little about tick diseases and how they have mutated, how they are spread by all kinds of animals and how almost ALL the medical community knows dick about it.
As wonderful as the field of medicine is in the US, it has major shortcomings and a healthy dose of crippling arrogance.
Unfortunately FR has its share of extreme preppers, Harold Camping-type end of days nutters, and people that read too many disaster novels that think this is the big one.
This is a serious problem for sure, but digesting a steady stream of articles on this will make a number of Freepers lose their minds.

Ten more months, and it will be about 100X worse than it is now. Boy oh boy how I hope Obama wasn’t lying when he “hugged and kissed” nurses treating Ebola patients.
If two Americans die from Ebola due to careless government, incompetence, or design. They should hang. We WARNED them to quarantine those countries. But the government allowed them to continue coming here, and now look what we have. AT LEAST 2 American women likely going to die because of the democrats political agendas. November is coming up, all the GOP has to do is point out how safe Americans are from Obama, run Ebola commercials. Stick it to the left with how safe we are. November has become a JOKE. This basically ENSURES a republican majority and a lame duck presidency.

Encourage them to walk out on their jobs. Nurses all over the country need to do it, and DEMAND that any visitor from any of those countries is banned. Would ensure most of the public turning on the Dems, just in time for November! Can’t get health care, because the democrats won’t ban flights?! I’m voting republican!

Obesity develops over years and years. As well as diabetes. Ebola will kill you within weeks of exposure. The higher the victims, the higher the spread. This is basic math. Every new victim makes the spread exponentially worse, whereas each obese person does not. You honestly do not understand how deadly Ebola is. A few more mistakes and it will become a big problem. One Ebola patient in a hospital basically leeches most of the staff. Then what do you do when you break your leg? Go to the ER where the staff is overworked, and been caring for multiple Ebola patients? Where the rooms themselves could and likely are crawling with Ebola?
Don’t compare Ebola to obesity. The only reason Ebola is here, is because of our government. Just get out of here with this BS. It’s not about panicking either, it’s that it will become a very very serious problem if it spreads around the US. A few ebola patients per major city would CRIPPLE our healthcare. I don’t think you understand that. Ten months from now there could be 4,000 cases in the US. Possibly more. Now, go forward another 10. 1-2 million. Then what? Where do they go for treatment? Tell me.

Honestly even in terms of infectious disease, rise of The 24 hour news cycle blows this nonsense way out of proportion. Obsessing over this stuff rots the mind.

Smallpox in North America was by some accounts more deadly than the Black Death in Europe. It literally wiped out a majority of the population in some areas. Somehow I don’t think that Ebola will do the same in a nation where medicine is slightly more advanced than Voodoo rituals. It will never match the thousands that die from flu every year.
