Jon Stewart rips 'sanity-resistant' Ebola coverage
Yahoo News ^ | Oct, 15th, 2014 | By Dylan Stableford

Americans' fear of an Ebola outbreak is being fueled by "sanity-resistant" cable TV news coverage and some members of Congress, Jon Stewart said on Tuesday's "Daily Show."

News that a Dallas nurse became infected with Ebola after treating a Liberian man stricken with the disease has sparked fears that the virus — which has killed thousands of people in West Africa — could spread to other parts of the United States.

"Clearly the news anchors are having trouble drawing the distinction between a person contracting the disease after working in close contact with an Ebola patient," Stewart said, "and the inevitability of all of us getting it now! Run!"

Later in the segment, Stewart introduced a clip of Texas Rep. Pete Sessions urging the White House to ban all U.S.-bound flights from West Africa

Plausible. The problem is that very little of that has been studied because it is very expensive to study. Unfortunately we are probably going to find out in the real world soon.

You are more likely to be disemboweled by a kangaroo than to die from Ebola. Get a grip people

Stupid comment from you and which I have heard several times from our "truthful" (/s) government. Same argument could have been made to the Indians in 1635, when the first ones got Smallpox.

Jon Stewart is more worried about the political fallout to his leftist agenda.

It won't take much to overwhelm the system. How many more carriers are already in the US

With 23 beds total at the five or so existing Level IV units in the USA, I'd guess #24 and up would cause the "overwhelmed" condition.

In Africa, healthcare workers were disproportionately infected because they received the patients at the time of their worst, most infectious condition -- immediately before, during, and after death.

Its always about them, it is the liberal delusion of grandeur, and when NYC gets screwed over by an ebola case it is all we will ever hear about how libs are affected.

Well...I’ll tell you what I think, Mr. Stewart.

This all feels and sounds like I’m in about the 4th or 5th chapter of a book by Michael Crichton.

Where the cracks are starting to show in the dam, but nobody wants to see them. Where all of the stupid decisions and policies are beginning to coalesce into a tidal wave of trouble that all could have been prevented.

I have a buddy who is a practicing MD who is retired military. He has NBC training, understands the operating in hazmat suits, decontam and propagation issues better than 99.9% of the population.

He is a little freaked.

These are the same people who want to ban guns when one person is shot, or Alar because some idiot actress is scared, or gluten or soda or football. NOW, when we have an actual danger brought about by invaders from Africa, they love death & danger and pooh pooh it.

Unfortunately they weren’t in an *appropriately* sterilized environment...

The protective gear was simply a gown, gloves, face-mask, and face shield. No shoe covers, no head covers, and it appears that there was inadequate decontamination training/practice.

That said, a lot of the panic-type responses are indeed over the top. The enterovirus going around is far more of a danger for those not actually handling infected ebola patients.

“bodily fluids” in this case may include sweat, as I understand, and certainly includes aerosolized flegm droplets.

Thank you for saying that. This hysteria is right up there with the Swine Flu thing in, I believe it was 2008. Then, like Bird Flu before it, it just disappeared.

Heh.

That said, I don’t think there is a lot of cause for general fear, but there is plenty of cause for political outrage. We’ve seen that these clowns will ignore basic epidemiology and decontamination (which should handle Ebola pretty well prior to it getting a widespread foothold) to engage in forceful wishing.

The medical profession knows quite a bit about Ebola...but they should be erring on the side of caution, considering that it is still a highly lethal disease, and this outbreak IS different - much larger - which suggests the strain of virus is at least a little different than it has been in the past.

Thanks....I hope you are correct...
I had no idea the health care workers in Dallas were so poor covered

I agree with those who say knowledge is key /irrational fear is an enemy while a healthy dose of fear can insure diligence...

It is rather concerning to see how different surgical sterilization policies are from NBC training, and how little appreciation there is for that, and how while almost anyone can do it that it does require explicit training and drilling - not just a notice on a bulletin board.
