Militants unleashed a wave of attacks in Iraq on Thursday, mainly targeting Shiite areas in and around the capital of Baghdad, killing at least 50 people and wounding dozens, authorities said.
The Islamic State group has overrun vast areas in western and northern Iraq as well as parts of neighboring Syria, and has vowed to destabilize and eventually take over Baghdad.
It claimed responsibility for the day's deadliest strike. In that attack, two parked car bombs exploded simultaneously in a commercial area in the northern Dolaie neighborhood, killing 14 civilians and wounding 34 others, a police officer said.

Guess what WON'T be making the network evening news shows tonight?
This will continue to happen until the Shias get up off their asses, screw up their courage, and defeat ISIS. I read that when this all went down in the summer, the Iraqi army outnumbered ISIS 10:1 and STILL ran away.
When ISIS takes Baghdad, does that mean, they ‘win’?
We obviously won’t be sending in ‘boots on the ground’ to beat them back.
At that point, I guess it will be a race to see which will take it first, The Saudis, or Iran. Meanwhile poor little Kuwait will be nervously watching.
As with everything else, the 0bozo “Administration” will already have a plan for blame deflection ready to go. It will either be “Bush’s Fault” or the House Republicans.....
I think it was even posted in these forums, the Shia’s have also had reprisal attacks.
They are duking it out in Yemen too apparently.
What’s happened to the guy who thought he was the Emperor of Sadr City? Has he melted away in the face of this threat when his blustering nonsense will only get him killed?
ISIS has to destabilize Baghdad so that ISIS can prevent an Iraqi Government forming there that can organize resistance against them.
ISIS should have many Sunni sympathizers in Baghdad amongst the general population that can help them in this goal against the Shiites and the foreign Infidels and their Muslim collaborators in Baghdad. -Tom
If Baghdad falls to ISIS, there will be a huge stream of Shiites south and into Iran. I would expect that at that point Iranian Revolutionary Guard units would become directly involved - a second Iran/Iraq war, if you will. Should be quite a show.
>When ISIS takes Baghdad, does that mean, they win?<
.
Yes.
When Baghdad falls, we have lost our chance to insert boots on the ground in Iraq. Where else do we have the facilities to fly large numbers of people and materiel in?
Tell me if my thinking is false.
Not ideal but Basra might work. It’s large city, respectable infrastructure and an international airport. Umm Qasar is just down the road with its considerable port facility.
So now we land in Basra and have to travel a long distance to where the enemy lies in waiting? Retaking Baghdad from ISIS will not be like conquering the city when Saddam Hussein was in charge.
ISIS fighters have proved to be more ferocious than the American-trained Iraqi army. The battle for Baghdad will be a huge bloodletting. American people will protest because of loss of American lives.
Not very efficient war waging, is it?
There have always been attacks in Bagdad killing 50 people (ok sometimes it’s 35 people or 47 people).
This has been going on pretty much continuously since Sadaam Hussein was on the run.
When isis takes baghdad what will the US do with its at-least-a-billion-dollar embassy? Is it a large mobile home and they can just pull it away?
new ISIS Hdq
Maybe Clown Prince nobola could have former prez carter present it to isis(given that he has experience giving American property away for nothing).
It’ll be a nice pad for ISIS.
We were soooooo stupid to put that much money into such an ediface. I can’t describe how stupid we were. There probably isn’t a word or series of words to describe what a stupid waste of money and resources that was/is.
Defending it would be even stupider if that is even possible.
Good points. Sorry not, if anyone can fight an inefficient war it’s the US. /s
*worry not. Sent from my iPhone ( damn it)
