Dr. Craig Spencer, who returned to New York City from Africa 10 days ago, was rushed in an ambulance with a police escort from his Harlem home to Bellevue Hospital on Thursday, sources said.

He was suffering from Ebola-like symptoms — a 103-degree fever and nausea, sources said.

While he was in Africa, the doctor had been treating Ebola patients in Guinea, sources said.

I know about the Ketogenic diet and if Ebola gets crazy, I’m all in. Certainly couldn’t hurt.

Interesting comments. The Warburg effect is also very interesting, and cancer cells do have a very high rate of glycolysis, but this metabolic shift is now thought to occur because of the malignant state of these cells - and is not the cause of malignancy as Warburg originally postulated.

Even with a ketogenic diet you will still have glycosylation, because you can provide sugars via other biochemical pathways. That said, whether or not the rate of glycosylation would be affected is a very interesting question.

Ketogenic diets were touted back in the 1930s for treating urinary tract infections - I guess by lowering urine pH. Ebola uses the host cell ribosomes to make virus proteins, including those that are found in the envelope. I don't know if glycosylation of these proteins is required for replication, or is an adaptation of the virus to avoid immune clearance.

Thanks for the questions, both of you.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

It will be a lot harder for liberals to dismiss this, since it is in their back yard. I even read liberals who thought ebola was God’s judgement on Texas, good for that.

Ebola in NYC, a larger, denser metropolitan area, home of many media outlets and one of the liberal epicenters of the country. Too many chattering heads are based there for it not to be the October surprise - and precious little of the coverage can be skewed to blame a for profit hospital, Republican governor, Ted Cruz, etc.

It falls on a Democrat mayor, Democrat governor, socialist city, liberal haven.

That would probably count as one of the few times ever someone says “oh, thank God it is malaria”.

So a doctor trained in ebola prevention protocols becomes infected, he boards a plane which lands at JFK where he will be screened for ebola, he goes about town for several days and then decides he needs to go to the hospital, and he tests positive for ebola.

The airport screening didn’t work.

The ebola prevention protocols didn’t work.

What do you think will happen when the average non-medical person from the hotzone becomes infected, boards a plane to JFK, passes screening, and then traipses around town for a few days?

Failure to quarantine persons who have been in the hotzone risks the lives of every single American. It is a high crime, an act of bio-terrorism, an act of war. This bastard needs to be impeached NOW.

According to the Daily Mail, the Doc visited a restaurant. Are the servers and dish washing part of the kitchen in danger?

Earlier that day, he went on a three-mile jog and took the 1 train to the High Line garden - a popular tourist destination - before eating out at a restaurant.

Good question. One thing I was going to mention in the post and forgot was the natural host reservoir and the theory of fruit bats. I'm not sure if this is a correlation only or potentially an important facet of the viral host.

No, they sure didn't.

I want to know WHY there seems to be so many incompetent people who are supposed to know better when it comes to this darn Ebola stuff. Unless, you CAN spike a high fever suddenly with this virus?

It might also be time to begin thinking seriously about the food supply and the chain through which it passes. It couldn’t hurt. I’m not one of those who sing happy tunes right up until the bodies start stacking up in the streets. At what point does preparedness and prudence cease to be “panic”? It seems the Liberal definition differs greatly from the Conservative one.

If I were to give any advice, I would suggest to start buying food and keep it in a large freezer. No singing show tunes until the bodies start stacking up. In fact, I would buy a large freezer and stock up on bulk foods, mainly frozen meats and anything that contains protein.
