A Silicon Valley startup has developed technology to let dispatchers know when a police officer's weapon has been fired.

The latest product by Yardarm Technologies would notify dispatchers in real time when an officer's gun is taken out of its holster and when it's fired. It can also track where the gun is located and in what direction it was fired.

When I see a new gun thing and "for police" I always translate that to "required on all handguns sold after 201X"

It will probably upload their status to the officer’s Facebook page and he will have to get a “like” from his supervisor before it will fire.

It seems to me that the risk of electronics fouling up outweighs the risk of an officer having his gun taken from his holster. That yoyo in Missouri was unsuccessful, primarily because there are safety mechanisms in holsters that make it fairly difficult to pull the weapon out from the wrong angle.

Another cure looking for a disease. Only in California...

Is “knowing when an officer fires his gun” EVER an issue?

Like the IRS emails and the various and sundry dash cam videos of potentially community public relations problems re: officer shootings, these alerts will also ‘disappear’ when it suits their purpose.

Need a quick phone app to spoof whatever signal these things send. If the system is swamped with fake signals it will be unworkable. Cloward-Piven, baby!

I don’t have a problem with police having something on their holsters which signals HQ when the pistol comes out. When a cop is in a firefight, he may not have time to call for backup — this thing would do it for him.

This technology only reports gun status. If it ‘fouls up’ it does not affect the function of the gun.

“Will it sense when they kill a family dog?”

The speaker will be programmed to say “Good Cop! Two donuts for you!” every time the LEO shoots a dog.

You have it right. Most others seem to not get it and are hung up on whether this is good or bad for cops. All electronic firearm stuff is bad for freedom. When the 'internet of things' encompasses the tools of freedom there will no longer be freedom. Companies that push this stuff should be shamed and boycotted out of business.

It will also have use in catching cops pulling a gun for no reason, other than as a penile extention. A lot of cops are getting very free with pointing guns at people.

Cops have no such freedom while on the job. I can see several valid applications to this. First, officer safety. Second, stopping thugs from pulling the gun just to be a tough guy.
, ie, penile extention.

Answer: Usually! The country has a lot of dead innocent citizens to prove it.

Exactly! You have to be doubly careful of “doughnut munchers” with short dicks.
