Ever since he turned 18 he has made a point of voting in general elections, having been brought up by his African American parents to think that it is important, part of what he calls “doing the right thing”. He remembers the excitement of voting for Barack Obama in 2008 to help elect the country’s first black president, his grandmother crying tears of joy on election night. “My grandfather and uncle, they used to tell me all the time there will be a black president. I never believed it, never in a million years.”

He voted again for Obama in his re-election bid in 2012, and turned out for the 2010 midterm elections in between. But this year is different. Kennie is one of an estimated 600,000 Texans who, though registered to vote, will be unable to do so because they cannot meet photo-identification requirements set out in the state’s new voter-ID law, SB14 .

But last week, in the early hours of 18 October, when most Texans were sleeping, the US supreme court snuck out a one-line judgmentthat allowed the voter-ID restrictions to be applied this election cycle. Without any explanation, a majority of the justices effectively threw Eric Kennie and many thousands of others like him – particularly black, Hispanic and low-income Texans – into a state of democratic limbo.

“This is the first time the courts have allowed a law that actually keeps people from voting to go into effect, even though a judge found it was passed for the purpose of making it harder for minorities to vote,” said Wendy Weiser, head of the democracy programme at the Brennan Centre for Justice.

There is no reason for an 18 year old kid in this country to not have a valid photo I.D.

And was his parents born and raised in Africa? It says they’re “African” American.

Born and raised is not the same as registered to vote.

Perhaps parent basement dwellers never encounter the issue... if they are walkers and teetotalers too.

I’m really curious how a situation like the claimed one comes to pass, unless it is through a conscientious objection to identification cards on principle.

Takes about 10 minutes at the DMV here and it is free.

Social Security Cards:

Why should I get a number for my child?

You need a Social Security number to claim your child as a dependent on your income tax return. Your child also may need a number if you plan to:

Open a bank account for the child;
Buy savings bonds for the child;
Obtain medical coverage for the child; or
Apply for government services for the child.

>>He was 18 in 2008 and he still doesn’t have a driver’s license?

Most likely, he had one....but there’s warrants out for the guy with that ID.

In 2008 I participated in Operation Chaos here in Texas. In the democrat primary I voted for Hillary(I listened to Sympathy for the Devil on my way to the polls.) When I attended the DEMOCRAT caucus that evening, I was asked to show photo id. I loudly protested, “I thought democrats were against showing id to vote,” and was tersely told, “If you don’t show id you, can’t participate. Dems want their party elections to be legitimate; they feel just the opposite about general elections.

It’s a mite pricey but the birth certificate needed by most places can be had by express mail. I guess someone could still claim to be someone else and get that other person’s birth certificate. But at least someone vouched for his or her identity.

He works as a “scrapper”, foraging in people’s garbage to collect cans, bottles and metal for recycling.

Maybe the United American Society of Scrappers (UASS) can help him out?

“I’ve never understood the liberals on this. Why do they not organize efforts to get people an ID so they can vote?”

Furthermore, is it not liberal groups that are pushing for a national iD?

Due to ramped up drivers license requirements I had to spend $25 to get my birth certificate. This was just to renew it!! If I have to spend $25 to get my new photo ID/drivers license these lazy stupid people mentioned in the article can do the same. If they cannot perform this minimum civic responsibility then tough!!!!

The real thing going on is lots of blacks are paranoid of “the law” and are afraid to get these IDs. Lots of blacks like to live off the grid and have nothing to do with Gov’t except when it comes to voting for Obama or other Dems to support the welfare state and what they get from it

“””He works as a “scrapper”, foraging in people’s garbage to collect cans, bottles and metal for recycling.””””

Whenever I bring scrap in I have to show an ID to get paid.
